“Mother India” (1957) was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raj Kumar, Kanhaiyalal, Jilloo Maa, Kumkum, Chanchal, Sheela Naik, Mukri, Ram Shastri etc in it.
This movie was a landmark movie in the annals of Hindi movies. Its music played an important part in the success of the movie.
This movie had as many as twelve songs in it, a fact which I did not realise when I watched this movie more than two decades after it was first released.
Eleven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past.
Here is the twelfth and final song from “Mother India” (1957) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar. It is picturised on Nargis and two kids (Sajid Khan and Surendra) playing her two young sons. The picturisation shows the three of them manually tilling their small piece of land , a task that was traditionally done by a pair of bullocks. Nargis pulling the ‘Hal” with her two kids holding the “hal” in the rear- this picture has gone on to become an unforgettable still from this movie.
Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.
with this song, “Mother India” (1957) joins the list of some 240 plus movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

duniya mein ham aaye hain to jeena hi padega
duniya mein ham aaye hain to jeena hi padega
jeewan hai agar zehar to peena hi padega duniya mein ham aaye hain to jeena hi padega
jeewan hai agar zehar to peena hi padega
gir gir ke museebat mein sambhalte hi rahenge
jal jaayen magar aag pe chalte hi rahenge gir gir ke museebat mein sambhalte hi rahenge
jal jaayen magar aag pe chalte hi rahenge
gham jisne diye
ae ae ae ae ae ae
gham jisne diye hain wahi gham dur karega gham jisne diye hain wahin gham dur karega duniya mein ham aaye hain to jeena hi padega
jeewan hai agar zehar to peena hi padega
aurat hai wo aurat jise duniya ki sharam hai
sansaar mein bas laaj hi naari ka dharam hai ae ae ae ae sansaar mein bas laaj hi nari ka dharam hai
zinda hai jo
o o o o o o
zinda hai jo izzat se wo izzat se marega zinda hai jo izzat se wo izzat se marega duniya mein ham aye hai to jeena hi padega
jeewan hai agar zehar to peena hi padega
maalik hai tere saath na dar gham se tu ae dil
mehnat kare insaan to kya kaam hai mushkil maalik hai tere saath na dar gham se tu ae dil
mehnat kare insaan to kya kaam hai mushkil
jaisa jo kare
ae ae ae ae ae
jaisa jo karega yahaan waisa hi bharega jaisa jo karega yahaan waisa hi bharega duniya mein ham aaye hai to jeena hi padega
jeewan hai agar zehar to peena hi padega
Mejority songs from film MOTHERINDIA,were known by each and everybody who were listening to the hindi film songs,in any corner of the world. So in my opinion all songs from MOTHERINDIA,BAIJU BAWRA should be treated like national anthem.I will add that some more films can be added to this list.
My information is that apart from Lata and Usha, another Mangeshkar sister Meena features in this number to make three singers for three characters who lip-sync it. Kindly check.
Atul ji,
Here are some Trivias about MOTHER INDIA-1957.
1. This is the only film in which ALL the 4 Mangeshkar sisters have sung songs-individually and in chorus.
2. The young boy, with Master Sajid Khan was Master Surendra.
3. This was India’s FIRST Oscar Nominated film in the category of ‘Best Foreign Film’
4. Originally SABOO-the Elephant Boy and the Hollywood star was to do the role which Sunil Dutt finally got.
5. Since the film was to be shown in the USA,the Mehboob Pictures’ Logo of Sickle and Hammer had to be removed, since it was the period of Anti Communist Russia Cold War.
