“Manohar”(1954) was a movie dubbed from Tamil movie “Manohara”(1954). It was produced by M Somasundaram and directed by L V Prasad for Manohar Films, Madras. The movie had Gemini Ganesan (in title role), Sadashivrao, T R Rajkumari,Kannamba, Natrajan etc. Its story and other details have been given by our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh in this post.

The palat side of today’s song, was posted – goodness, four years ago. And Sandhya ji is now completing 87 years today, and stepping into her 88th. Abundant greetings to Sandhya Mukherji – we wish for her good health and comfort, and that we may get many more such opportunities to greet her.
Four years back, I had posted the lovely, lively “O Re Jeene Waale, Hans Le Gaa Le Dhoom Mach Le” – one of her very few non film songs recorded in Hindi. From the same gramophone record (GE 24065 – Columbia), I present today, the song from the other side. A more poignant song, a sad song of separation – this song is no less iconic. As I tried to search for more, I drew a blank (so far). It seems that this gramophone record and these two songs may well be the only two non-film Hindi songs that have been recorded by Sandhya ji.

“Pahla Aadmi”(1950) was a “historical” movie which was directed by Bimal Roy for New Theatres, Calcutta. The movie had Smriti Biswas, Balraj Vij, Pahadi Sanyal, Ashita Bose, Pal Mahendra, Zahar Roy, Vijay Kumar, Heeralal, Asit sen, Bhoopendra Kapoor, Bela Bose, Puttan, Pt Natwar, Chandtara, Maya etc in it.

Question-Answer (Sawaal-Jawaab) songs and its variant, teasing (Ched-Chaad) songs have a special place in Hindi films. These songs are generally duets of male and female voices and are my favourites in the genre of light songs. These songs are sometimes also composed in qawaali style. One can enjoy these songs doubly when the video clips of such songs are available and directors like Guru Dutt, Vijay Anand etc were involved in the picturisation of these songs.

Sandhya Mukherjee – a voice that is comparatively heard less frequently on the Hindi film screen, is a big name in the world of Bangla music and Bangla film music. In fact her association with Hemant Kumar as a duet singer, is almost as legendary as the on screen pair of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. Majority of the duets of these two actors in Bangla cinema, have been playback sung by these two singers.

Majrooh Sulatanpuri’s filmy career as a lyricist started with ‘Shah Jehan’ (1946) under the music direction of Naushad. In the same year, he also wrote lyrics for ‘Keemat’ (1946) for which Naushad was the music director. It was only after the success of ‘Andaz’ (1949) that Majrooh Sultanpuri got his foothold in Hindi film industry. Unfortunately, this success was short lived as he was arrested in 1949 for his anti-establishment poems. He was given an option of either to apologise or face two years of prison. He opted for the later. At the time of his arrest, he was writing lyrics for the film ‘Aarzoo’ (1950) and it was his first collaboration with the music director Anil Biswas. This film also became a hit and all the songs including the iconic song ae dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal became very popular.
