‘Chimani Ka Dhuaan-1973’ was directed by Prabhat Mukherjee for Kamayani Pictures, Calcutta. It had Motilal, Balraj Sahani, Helen, Achla Sachdev, Dhumal, Sabita Chatterjee, Madhukar, Baby Madhu, Harsh, Sharminder, Mohan Ojha and Shefali.
R.S.Preetam was the lyricist of this movie, while the music was composed by Robin Chatterjee.
I came to know about this film’s name in June’2014, on the occasion of ‘environment day’, for which I try to connect ‘Hindi films’ names related with nature, pollution, ecology, environment and environment protection for a poem.
It seems that ‘Chimani Ka Dhuaan-1973’ must be an obscure movie of its time, as very little information of this movie is available in the domain.
As per HFGK this movie was passed by Censor on 31.12.1973. HFGK mentions that as per the films promotional booklet it is clear that the film was earlier named as ‘Praayschit’.
This film had a total of seven songs (as per HFGK) and Aarti Mukherjee, Mahendra Kapoor, Pranab Patnaik, Sandhya Mukherjee, Shipra Bose and Suman Kalyanpur gave their voices to these songs.
I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
Today we enjoy this song sung by Sandhya Mukherjee from this film which is making an entry on the blog with this song.
Song-Beet jaayegi umariya(Chimni Ka Dhuaan)(1973) Singer-Sandhya Mukherji, Lyrics-R S Preetam, MD-Robin Chatterji
Lyrics
Beet jaayegi umariya
Ye phir na milegi
Beet jaayegi umariya
Ye phir na milegi
Lagaa lo honthon se jigar ki
Peer bujhegi
Lagaa lo hothon se jigar ki
Peer bujhegi
Haaye phir na milegi
Beet jaayegi umariya
Ye phir na milegi
Haaye phir na milegi
Khushi ka naam zindagi
Bhulaa nahin dena aa
Khushi ka naam zindagi
Bhulaa nahin dena
Ro ro ke aansuon se
Jalaa nahin dena
Ro ro ke aansuon se
Rooth jaayegi gagariya
Ye phir na bharegi
Rooth jaayegi gagariya
Ye phir na bharegi
Ye phir na milegi
Ye phir na milegi
Beet jaayegi umariya
Ye phir na milegi ee
Phir na milegi
Ye jagmagaati ee raushni
Saji huyi jawaaniyaan
Bula rahi hain rok raah
Roop ki ye raaniyaan
Bula rahi hain rok raah
Bhulaa na dena bhool se ye
Phir na milengi
Bhulaa na dena bhool se ye
Phir na milengi
Ye phir na milegi
Haaye phir na milegi ee
Phir na milegi ee ee ee ee

Devnagri Script Lyrics:
———————————

I think this must be a delayed film. Also from the information as mentioned in HFGK, that it was earlier titled as ‘Praayschit’, it seems that this film might have taken years for completion and release.

Nayan ji, Avinash ji,
Yes, this is a much delayed film. Although the specific year is not available, but this film was planned and started production in the early 1960s, or maybe even late 1950s.
In fact the original records available for this film are 78 rpms on Columbia Label, with series numbers given as GE 30011, GE 30012, and GE 30013. These series numbers belong to the Columbia’s GE series records that was stared in the second half of 1950s; possibly around 1955 or 1956. These being just the very initial records in GE 30000 series, it is possible that these songs were recorded as early as 1955 or 1956.
Getting to this period in time, the film could have started production with the star cast indicated. Details of why this film got delayed are not available, but we do know from Geet Kosh volume 5 that this film was certified and released in 1973.
Also, if we go back and check volume 4 (1961-1970) of the Geet Kosh, we find this very film listed in the appendix as, in the list of unreleased films of the decade of 1960s.
So this does tie in, and the cast of actors is most likely correct.

How can Motilal be in the movie of 1973, as he was expired in 1965?

Motilal may or may not be part of Chimni Ka Dhuan, but such a scenario is certainly plausible if a movie took long time to release. One such example is movie Aakhri Sunghursh which started in early 80s with Vijayendra and Sarika as lead, but ultimately released in 1997! By that time many of the actors in the movie were dead for a long time — Jeevan (1985), Pinchoo Kapoor (1989), Om Shivpuri (1990), Rajan Haksar, etc.
