“Birha Ki Raat” (1950) was directed by Jagidaar for Noble Arts Production. The movie had Dev Anand, Snehprabha, Nargis, Snehprabha, Om Prakash, Jagirdar, Madan Puri etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. seven songs from the movie have been discussed in the past.

Here is the eightt and final song from the movie to appear in the blog.

This rare song is sung by Shamshad Begam and chorus. Sarshar Sailaani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagartam.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

With this song, “Birha Ki Raat” (1950) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. It is the first movie in nearly four weeks to get YIPPEED in the blog. This YIPPEE project as well as the debutant movie project have slowed down of late, but hopefully it is just a temporary phase of lull.

This song under discussion is from the film “Birha ki Raat”(1950). Another song I discussed from this film the other day “bahut purdard hai aye sunnewaale”” starts with the sh’er :

jahaan mein jin ki ummeedon ke bede
paar hote hain
woh khush qismat hazaaron mein kahin
do chaar hote hain

‘Beda paar lagaana’ is a saying in hindi/urdu meaning ‘achieving the ambition or reaching ones destination. The word ‘Beda’ literally means a “Fleet of big ships”. The opposite of this saying in a curse “Beda garq ho teraa” or a lament “beda garq hogayaa”. “Garq’ is drowning in water. The special thing about these sayings or muhaavra’s which are used in urdu/hindi, is that they can be used backwards, forwards, in singular/plural,past/present tense, negative/positive and in varied situation they can be applied.

This movie “Birha ki Raat” (1950) had Dev Anand and Nargis playing lead roles, which is a rare occurance. Video links are not available on youtube for the songs of this film, so we make do with only the audio links. Only one song, a duet by Rafi-Lata is posted in the blog so far. When I heard this Rafi solo “bahut purdard hai ae sunnewaalon daastan meri” for the first time, it touched me. Then on second hearing I found it to be a very endearing ghazal.

Regulars of this blog may be wondering why I have discussed only one post today and then nothing ! The reason is, today my wife has all the time to supervise over me and sitting at the computer is proving out to be difficult for me. I somehow managed to post one writeup today when she was not looking. Now it is afternoon and she has gone out for her favourite pastime, viz shopping. I refuse to have anything to do with shopping so I have dropped her (and the daughter) to a shopping complex and come back. Assuming that they will be there for three hours, I need to make the most of these three hours to make up for lost time. 🙂

“Birhaa Ki Raat” (1950), which is an obscure movie by now, had actors like Dev Anand, Nargis, Madan Puri, Snehprabha Pradhan, Omprakash etc in it. Dev Anand and Nargis paired together ? I never knew that a movie like this existed.
