“Shagoon” or “Shagun” (1964) was a Shaheen Art production. It was directed by Nazar. The movie had Kamaljeet, Waheeda Rehman, Neena, Achla Sachdev, Libi Rana, Nazir Hussain, Nana Palsikar, Pratima Devi, Rajdeep, Chand Usmani etc in it.

During my earlier stage of baptism to Hindi film songs of the golden era, whenever I came across some new songs I liked, I would want to know the name of the film, singers and themusic directors ( in that order) of the concerned songs. I never enquired about who wrote these likeable songs. One song that made me to know the name of the lyricist was “main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya” from HUM DONO(1961). This song virtually introduced me to a great Urdu poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. I feel shy to reveal here that though I liked those iconic songs of PYAASA (1957) but that did not trigger my brain to enquire as to who wrote those melancholic and the soul searching songs. As I came to know later, those songs were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

There are some Hindi movie songs that become so popular that they get adopted as part of life. For instance, many prayers in Hindi movies have actually become school prayers as well as prayers during religious festivals. Then there are lullabies in Hindi movies that have become integral part of the growing up process of generations of kids in India. Then there are patriotic songs from the movies that are hugely popular and are invariable played during days of national importance ( viz.independence day and republic day).

I have been posting songs from “Shagoon” (1964) these days. These songs are very nice songs to listen to, though the movie itself was a box office disaster.

It is always refreshing to listen to female singers other than the usual ones. But is is not always possible of other singers to get past the monopoly of the few female singers.

Parbaton ke pedon par

There are many instances when songs from obscure movies went on to become evergreen. This song from a barely remembered movie called Shagoon (1964) is one such song. I have listened to this song and I liked it too, but I had no other information other than the fact that the male voice belonged to Rafi.
