Mythological films have been an important part of Indian films since long and this was evident from the fact that there was hardly any production house that did not make a Mythological film. The period of 1940 to 1965 can be called an age of meaningful religious films. In this too, the 1950 to 1960 period was the peak period for this genre. Later on the production of such films dwindled and these days, of course, one has to make efforts to find such a film, with a large magnifying glass !

“Shiv Bhakt” (1955) was an A V M production movie. It was directed by H L M Sinha. The movie had Shahu Modak, Ragini, Misra, Padmini, Pandhari Bhai, Anant Kumar, Gope etc in it.

I have received quite a few e mails today reminding me that today (1 may 2013) is the 94th birth anniversary of Manna Dey and that no Manna Dey songs have been discussed on the occasion so far. Have no worry, I was aware of the occasion and I fully intended to discuss quite a few Manna Dey songs on the occasion. It is just that it has taken me a bit longer to do that.

It still surprises some of my friends when I tell them that I completed my high school studies in Hindi medium. It was unthinkable that a person belonging to one of the southern states would join the Hindi medium school. It was a surprise for me as well.

“Mohini” (1957) was a Navkala Niketan movie. It was directed by Raman B Desai. Starcast of the movie had names like Shahu Modak, Nirupa Roy, Krishna Kumari, Madan Puri, Roop Kumar, Shakila etc in it.
