“Kahin Aur Chal”(1968) was one movie which few people have seen because this movie was withdrawn after one show in one movie hall by its maker. That is how it was Tolaram Jalani, the maker of this movie, who was not interested in releasing the movie and was more interested in balancing his books for income tax purposes by showing this movie as a loss making venture for him.

SHANKAR- JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s…Song No. 8
———————————————-
Should an actor working as a Hero be necessarily good looking ? In India, yes ! If one sees the list of heroes from 1931 till recent time, one will find that on 99% of the occasions, the Heroes were handsome, good looking, tall and with good physique- irrespective of whether they could act or not. Not that there were no heroes who were ordinary looking, but by and large they were exceptions or they were the producers or directors themselves ( like Kishore Sahu ) or their sons etc. The Indian audience had a mind set that a film Hero must be good looking and the Heroine must be beautiful-preferably.

SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s…Song No. 6
———————————————
The mid 50s was a period when one could see the deep impact of the Nehruvian socialism on the film that were made. Great film makers like Mehboob Khan, B R Chopra and Raj Kapoor tried to support Nehru and Gandhian philosophies through their films. Being great artists, they combine socialism with entertainment in a skillful way. Films like Naya Daur, Mother India, Jagte Raho, Phir subah hogi, Do bigha Zameen,Boot polish,Ab dilli door nahin etc and later on films like Son of India and Naya Kanoon etc clearly indicated Socialism.

SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s….Song No 4
————————————————
After having lost the melody and sweetness in their music post Junglee and after an attempt to redeem their prestige with a few sporadic melodies, Shankar Jaikishan came closest to their earlier magic with Teesri Kasam-66. Mukesh was just superb. Except for their songs made for Shammi Kapoor films, rest of their songs failed miserably. There was a talk in the industry about their differences and decline. This of course did not bother them much.

SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s….Song No.3
———————————————–
Shammi Kapoor shouted “YAAHOO ” in the film Junglee-63 and the equation of film music changed drastically. Shammi Kapoor became a representative of the Rebel Youth of his times and the music in his films became loud and unmusical, as it remained only an aid to heighten his presence on the screen. Market Savvy Shankar Jaikishan started composing only those songs which served this purpose, thus sacrificing melody considering it redundant in his compositions.

Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s
The second song in the series “Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s” is a duet of Asha and Manna Dey from the film “Baaghi Sipaahi”(1958).
By 1955, with great efforts and difficulties, Shankar Jaikishan came out of the rigouring influence and control of Raj Kapoor on their music compositions. Now they were free to fly high and be the “Numero Uno “.

Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s-1
We are starting a New Series from today- “Shankar-Jaikishen in the 50s”.
There was a Shankar-Jaikishan mania in the 50s and the 60s. They not only had popularity, versatility and flexibility but also unparallelled success. After Husnlal-Bhagatram, it was Shankar-Jaikishan pair who actually set the trend of composer duos in Hindi films. After Shankar-Jaikishan, no new solo composer, barring perhaps R D Burman, tasted such consistent success. Even R D Burman confessed that in the 1980s, he lost out to competition from duos everywhere.

There are some songs you have heard, and there are some songs whose tune and credits you can also recall. You take note of songs (& hence remember or recall them) for various reasons. It could be because it touched or exhilarated you a lot, or it is by your favourite singer/MD/Lyricist or because of an occasion in your life you associate the song with. But today’s song is remembered by me for a separate reason!
