“Shikaar” (1955) was directed by Ravindra Dave for Tara Films. The movie had Nimmi, Shekhar, Smriti Biswas, Moti Sagar, Bipin Gupta, Veer Sakhuja, Alka, Bhupendra Kapoor, Sooraj, Baby Lata, ameena Bai, Ratan Gaurang, C L Shah with Johny Walker and Shyama as guest artists.

I often get confused between the two similarly named movies of 1960s, viz “Shikaar” and “Shikaari”. The confusion is compounded by the fact that both movies had similar storylines, where the hero would go to a jungle for “shikaar” where he would enounter tribals wearing Red Indian/ African kinds of heargears etc and the daughter of the chief would be the chief female dancer among the tribal dance troupe that would sing and dance at the drop of a spear.

“Shikaar” (1968) is not to be confused with “Shikaari” (1963) though I always confuse between the two. The confusion is further compounded by the facts that both these movies have the same singers and they have sung some fantastic songs in both these movies.

One reason why the songs of the golden era live in our memory is the lyrics which were soul of these songs. Secondly, the singers sand these songs with involvement and passion, and thirdly, the music of these songs created just the right ambience for the mood of the song.

I am seriously considering opening a new category of songs called “Helen” songs. And this category will certainly have many entries, considering that a cabaret by Helen was a must in most mainstream Bollywood movies for much of 1960s and 1970s.

This song was an absolutely iconic song circa 1960s ever since I started following Bollywood music as a child. I had no idea which movie this song was from, but this is one song that I have nver forgotten since.
