Today (8 september) is the birthday of S Mohinder, a music director of yesteryears who gave us some wonderful songs in the golden era of Hindi movie music. Born in 1925, S Mohinder composed music in movies like “Sehra” (1948), “Jeewan Saathi” (1949), “Shrimatiji”(1952), “Bahaadur” (1953), “Paapi” (1955), “Naata”(1955), “Shehzaada” (1955), “Kaarwaan” (1956), “Shirin Farhad” (1956), “Mehlon Ke Khwaab” (1960), “Picnic” (1966) etc. He is one of those music directors who were criminally underutilised by the Hindi movie music industry.

So I come across this foot tapping melody by Rafi Saab, and as I start looking for details, up comes the name of the picture – “Miss ‘58”. First reaction is ‘wow, ok’. But then, thinking of the film “Mr and Mrs ‘55”, well why not “Miss ‘58”. Then a little more browsing on the blog reveals that there are already six films represented here whose names start with ‘Miss. . .’. and eight films starting with ‘Mr. . .’, and of course ‘Mr and Mrs 55’. And a cursory browse through the list of films from other sources, shows that there still are more films starting with ‘Miss’ and ‘Mr’ that are awaiting entry on this website.

When the words “Kitna Haseen Hai Jahaan” cross the eyes, the mind may bring in the memories of an OP Nayyar melody sung by Asha ji from the 1968 film Humsaayaa. (That song is actually titled ‘Kitna Haseen Hai Ye Jahaan’). But there is another, very beautiful and enchanting melody from eleven years before, wherein once again, Asha ji has sung a similar titled song, and music this time around is by N Dutta. I am now writing about this song from the 1957 film ‘Mr. X’. A film that is more famous for probably the raciest song that Rafi Saab has rendered in Hindi films, “Laal Laal Gaal Jaan Pe Hain Laagoo”. Here is another delightful melody from this film, that must hold out to be one of the most endearing song by Asha ji, describing the setting of the sun and the oncoming nightfall, and the emotions it brings to a heart in love. The words are lovely, the composition is soft and melodious, all the right ingredients for an evening song for lovers.

I came across a veritable gem today, that I had once heard many many years ago; I had no info about this song, just remembered the tune and some words, that would sometimes just come up in my mind by themselves and I would hum them, always longing to hear this song again. And today, while searching for something else, I accidentally bumped into this old long lost friend of mine.

The golden era of Hindi movie music was enriched not only by the well known music directors, but also by the lesser known names. Many of these lesser known music directors deserved much more recognition and opportunities than what they ultimately ended up with.
