Mukesh and His Composers – 33
Singer and composer Narayan Dutt is a victim of same-name confusion where he is always mistaken for the more famous N Datta. The confusion further escalates with Datt, Dutta etc. being used for both composers. The career of Narayan Dutt has already been written by our Arunkumar ji in his posts for the songs “Dagmag Dagmag Doley Naiya” (film ‘Jogan’, 1950) and “Gupchup Un Sang Ho Gayin Akhiyaan Chaar Re” (film ‘Mordhwaj’, 1952)

People intersted in old Hindi movie music often come across names that may confuse people. For instance, there are people who confuse between Naushad and Nashaad. Then there are people (including some who are regarded as knowledgeable by others as well as by themselves) who think that Ghulam Haider and Ghulam Mohammad are one and the same ! A few years back, I was listening to an audiocast (I think the actual tem used in different) of a programme on old songs. The presenter presented a song from “Shaheed, viz. Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujawaan shaheed ho (Shaheed) . After the song, the presenter informed the listeners that the music of this song was compose by Ghulma Haider, and that music lovers are awrae of this music director for his compositions in “Paakeeza” (1972). After listening to this sentence, I lost all respect for the knowledge of the presenter about old Hindi movies.

There have been two Hindi movies called “Shama” and there are many people including “experts” who get mixed up in this confusion. There movies were “Shama” (1946) and “Shama” (1961). The confusion is compounded by the fact that the music directors of these movies were Ghulam Haider and Ghulam Mohammad respectively and there are people who think that the two were the same person. In fact I once watched a podcast about old songs where the podcaster very knowledgeably told the audience that Ghulam Haider, who composed the music of “Shaheed” (1948) later composed the music of “Pakeezah” (1972).
