Today’s song is from an interesting comedy film- 300 days and after-1938.

The title of this film itself was of a different type and not like any other film so far. The story was also of a different type.

This was the first decade of the Talkie films. it had just completed 7 years with 829 films, but in these 7 years many experimental films were made and various types of genres were tried. In these years the stress had been on making films on Folk tales, Mythological and Historical stories, remakes of successful Silent films, Love stories and Social films etc.

Today’s song is from a film from the early era of the first decade of the Talkie films – Postman aka Abhilasha-1938. First of all, let us take a look at what was happening in 1938, in the Hindi film industry….

1938 was an interesting year in the early life of the Talkie films. The film making studios had firm footing with a studio system and they tried a variety of subjects in their films. In the 88 Hindi films produced in 1938, one finds almost every Genre of film subjects, except perhaps the usual Folk stories and Historical themes. Comedy, Tragedy, Fiction, Jungle stories, Costume, Socials, Musicals, Mythologicals, you name it and you had it. Content and technical expertise had improved as films on famous novels were made.

If one looks at professions, we find that different professions have enjoyed popularity during different times. As new inventions were made, new professions came about. The profession of film actors, technicians etc were created when film making started. Singers have been there in the past as well but they typically used to be patronised in royal court. with the invention of gramophone recording, singers’ songs could be recorded and played even at remote locations where the singer would never go. That way this invention revolutionised the spread of music. As Radio was invented, these records could be played on radio stations and the same songs could reach a vast audience who did not need to possess these records themselves. So Radio, along with records, enabled dissemination of music, as well as news etc at a level that was revolutionary in human history.

My post is coming after almost 15 days’ gap. It was not because I was out of station, but due to the Laptop problem. The Laptop could not be repaired despite all efforts and I had to go for a New one. This is the first post from my New Laptop.

Today’s song is from the film Badi Maa-1945.

One of the favourite film titles of the filmmakers was the word ‘Maa’. There were 4 released and 1 unreleased film titled plain ‘Maa’. There were also 23 films starting with the word ‘Maa’, like Maa Baap (4 times), Maa, Behan aur Biwi, Maa beta, Maa beti etc. There was ‘ Maa ki Saugandh’ for Hindi lovers and ‘Maa ki Qasam’ for Urdu lovers. In addition there were other varieties of ‘Maa’ like, Badi Maa, Chhoti Maa, Sauteli Maa, Meri Maa, Teri Maa, Iski Maa, Uski Maa, Sabki Maa etc ending with Maa tujhe Salaam. Jokes aside, are titles for films in shortage or they just wanted to milk the cow by trying to arouse sentiments of a gullible audience ?

Today’s song is from the film Comrades-1939.

The title of the film was highly misleading. The general meaning of the word Comrades is a Communist Party Member. I was surprised how this title was given to a film, that too when the second world war had just begun. But this title was used to indicate the intimacy and friendship of 2 boys and 1 girl from their childhood. This was a Love triangle naturally, when 2 boys and 1 girl are involved.

Today’s song is a duet from a very old film-almost 90 year old- Gramophone Singer-1938.

From the 19th century till the beginning years of the 20th Century, the only means of public entertainment was stage dramas and local folk dances pertaining to each demographic region individually. The first gramophone recording took place in India when 2 Nautch Girls- Sashi Mukhi and Feni Bala from Amarendra Dutta’s classical Theatre sang songs in Calcutta on 8-11-1902, Saturday, for a recording.
