Nigaahon mein tum ho

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movies and a regular contributor to this blog.

JAADOO NAGARI (1961) as the name suggests, was a fantasy film with Ranjan and Vijaya Choudhary as lead actors. Other cast included Tiwari, Helen and Majnu. The film was produced under the banner of Mukul pictures and directed by Radhakant who had directed some of Dara Singh films such as Rustam-e-Rome (1964), Boxer (1965), Insaaf (1966) and Toofaan (1969).

I had never heard of this film until a few months back when I came across a video clip of the song ‘nigaaon mein tum ho khayaalon mein tum ho’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. I then realised that I had heard this song many times on Vividh Bharati in my younger days. The song was written by Hasrat Jaipuri and S N Tripathi was the music director. Now I find that the said video clip is missing from YT. So only audio clip is available ofthis song. The song is picturised in a set replicating a huge palace with a pond at the edge of which Vijaya Choudahry is seen sitting and singing the song. During the course of the song picturisation, her beloved (Ranjan) makes a surreptitious appearance.

The song is very melodious and worth listening multiple times.

Song-Nigaahon mein tum ho (Jaadoo Nagri) (1961) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-S N Tripathi

Lyrics

raat ka khaamosh sannaata na pooch
ye hamaare dard ki aawaaz hai

nigaahon mein tum ho
nigaahon mein tum ho
khayaalon mein tum ho
nigaahon mein tum ho
khyalaaon mein tum ho
jidar dekhti hoon
nazar aa rahe ho
mere dil ki dhadkan
ye batla rahi hai
khushi ki bahaaron ko
tum laa rahe ho
nigaahon mein tum ho

jahaan tum gaye ho akele nahin ho
jahaan tum gaye ho akele nahin ho
tumaare hi sang mera dil bhee gaya hai
mere dard-e-dil ki tumhi to dawaa ho
mere hasraton par tumhi chhaa rahe ho
nigaahon mein tum ho

kuchh aisi adaa se teri yaad aayi
kuchh aisi adaa se teri yaad aayi
kadam dagmagaaye nazar mushkurayee
hawaa gungunaayee to maine ye samjhaa
bade pyaar se tum chale aa rahe ho
nigaahon mein tum ho

Kamath ji,
Thanks for posting a song from a film which was very interesting because of the sword fight sequences of Ranjan-the Hero, who was a real life expert in Sword fighting.
JADOO NAGRI-1961 was directed by Radhakant, who came from Madras to try his luck in film direction.Unfortunately,he ended up in getting only B and C grade films to direct, but even in these films he was very good.Starting with Matlabi Duniya in 1961 upto Mahasati Tulsi-86,he had directed 21 films,14 of which came in the 60s alone.Like he was known to make Darasingh films,he was also known for Tarzan Movies.
He directed Tarzan aur Jadugar-63,Tarzan aur Jalpari-64 and Tarzan and Circus-65.
Rudra Bhairav(Tiwari) the king of jadu Nagri was bent upon destroying the kingdom of Devpur.Being an evil Magician,he converted the king of devpur into a stone statue.he would kidnap one child on every Amavas and kill it.
Madn singh(Ranjan),the prince of Devpur learnt about all this from his mother on being 20 yr. old.he vowed to kill Rudra and bring his father back to life.He sets for Jadu Nagri, with his friend Chandan(Majnu). On his way,he helps a Giant to get free from a curse. He gives him a Magic flute.Further they fight and defeat the army of princess Chandra(Vijaya Ch.).Chandra falls in his love.Chandra’s magic Mynah shows him the way to Jadu nagri. They reach Jadunagri and fight with Rudra who converts Madan into a Parrot and Chandan into a Dog.Princess Chandra and Mynah help them by using magic flute.Madan then kills the Parrot on a tree, who is guarding the life of Rudra.Rudra dies,Madan’s father becomes a human and Chandra and Madan get united.

Thanks for the details of the film.
The only fantasy film I saw was HATIMTAI (1956). In this film the secret of the magician’s power was in a parrot and in JADOO NAGARI, mayna seems to play an important role 🙂

Just stumbled upon a song from film ‘wo dekho udhar chaand’ sung by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey from film ROOP KUMARI (1956). Lyrics is by B D Mishra and MD is S N Tripathi. The tune and orchestration of ‘Nigaaon mein tum ho’ matches almost 100% with the song from ROOP KUMARI.

Pl listen to this audio link : http://youtu.be/a_WGe721gIE

By the way, I liked both these songs.
