Mera pyaar mujhe lauta do

Posted on: March 4, 2012

This article is written by Khyati Bhatt, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Hindi Cinema has given us the treasure of so many melodious singers who never restricted their ability only for the movie songs. The list includes K.L.Saigal, Pankaj Mulick, Jagmohan, C.H.Atma, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd.Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood, Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar( which is something new to me and thanks to Arunji for that info) and may be few more.

The history proves that these versatile singers never discriminated between a movie song and a private song/ghazal/bhajan when it came to the quality of their voice. In my personal list, Mohd. Rafi is at the top, not just because I am a huge fan of him, but when it came to bhajan, let it be for a movie or as a private one, he portrayed the quality of a true religious person by giving the best voice/effect for all the bhajans. Ek sachha insaan hi yeh kar sakta hai.

I remember my early school days, when my father would keep radio on and we (bro + sis) used to listen to his private bhajans early morning while getting ready for school. yeh alag baat hai ki subah ki bhaag daud mein to pura bhajan kabhi dhyaan se nahi suna tha, lekin us bhajan se jo mood ban ta tha uska mahatwa aaj samaj sakti hoon. Sorry I just got carried away with my childhood memories and Rafi’s bhajans.

When I think about private ghazals, the first singer in my list is Talat Mahmood. Eventhough K.L.Saigal, Pankaj Mullick and others were seniors and had beautiful ghazals under their name, pehali private ghazal maine Talat Sahab ki suni. My list of Talat Mahmood’s songs was limited upto Jalte hai jiske liye (Sujata), Jaye to jaye kahan(Taxi Driver) and few more. It took me a while to “feel” the voice of this great singer. Then slowly I developed the “taste” and started loving his style. Talat has sung many private ghazals and songs. So, it was not easy to choose the first private ghazal of his for this blog. Hope you all would cherish this particular ghazal by “Ghazal Ka Badsaah”.

Song-Mera pyaar mujhe lauta do (Talat Mehmood NFS)(1950) Singer-Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Sajjan

Lyrics

mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
main jeewan mein ulajh gaya hoon
main jeewan mein ulajh gaya hoon
tum jeena sikhla do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do

thukraane se pehle mujh ko
lauta do woh preet ki baaten
meri hansi mastiyaan meri
lauta do woh chaandni raaten
mere sapnon ko lauta do
mera toota dil lauta do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do

maine jisko jeewan samjha
tumne uski hansi udaayi
dikha dikha phoolon ke sapne
mujh ko kaanton ki raah bataayi
mera apnaapan lauta do
mere geet mujhe lauta do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
main jeewan mein ulajh gaya hoon
main jeewan mein ulajh gaya hoon
tum jeena sikhla do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
mera pyaar mujhe lauta do

Another fantastic non-filmy ‘ghazal’ by Talat is the soft “Chup chaap akele chup chupke, main geet khushi ke gaatha hoon, apna jee behlatha hoon…’

Menon Sahab,
yeh ghazal bhi badhiya hai.

Loved listening to this. Talat saab is anyway one of my favourite singers. Always a pleasure to listen to his voice – and to learn new songs sung by him. Thank you, Khyati ji.

Rajaj,
Thanks for good words.

where have the days of these songs gone?
koi lauta do meray betay huan din ….

A wonderful geet by Talat Saheb who always sang it in his live concerts. The geet was written by Sajjan, known as a fine character actor in bollywood films.

I heard this ghazal first on SLBC in the 7:30am-8:00am purane filmon ke geet program. Was hunting for this for the last several years thinking it was a film song until finally I posted a note in Khalid Mahmood’s website. Promptly got the song in my mailbox!
Those were the days! When SLBC’s Padmini Pereira was in the right mood, she would select the most haunting melodies and alternate Talat and Lata (just as she used to alternate with Dalbir Singh Parmar), with the final song always from KL Saigal. A typical sequence would be
1. Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
2. Badi barbaadiyan lekar meri duniya mein pyaar aaya
3. Main paagal mera manwa paagal
4. Yun hasraton ke daag mohabbat mein dho liye
5. Har shaam shaam-e-gham hai, har raat hai andheri
6. Katate hain dukh mein din pehloo badal badal ke
7. Mera pyaar mujhe lauta do
8. Tum kyaa jaano tumhari yaad mein hum kitna roye
9. Dil jalta hai to jalne de
Such beauty, so stirring

I just shut my eyes & enjoyed the ghazal..feeling was awesome…thanks a lot all I can say is ..I am 58 and I would like to say..
Mera Bachman mujhe Lauta do…I want to get into yesteryear time capsule
