#Drunkard Songs -1 #
The song in this post is a drunkard song. We already have more than 200+ songs of this category in the blog but there are still many more😊 such songs yet to be represented here.
I was aware of many drunkard songs that are already covered in the blog from my radio listening and music collection days, but I was not aware that there were such a large number of these songs in Hindi films.
I have mentioned it several times that one of the reasons for me to like these songs was that they contained some high class poetry 😊 . The protagonist of these songs would often wax lyrical about philosophy of life. The protagonist would look cheerful while drunk, no matter he put others around him in embarrassing situation.😊
During my formative years, I grew up with some iconic drunkard songs such as ‘peene waalon ko peene kaa bahaanaa chaahiye’ and ‘jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabee’. Then, there were songs like ‘daaru kee bottle mein sahab paanee bhartaa hai’ around the same time. Incidentally all these songs came in the same year viz 1974. I was a six year old kid in 1974, and I do not know what impressions these songs left on my impressionable mind at that time.
I thought of check to see if there were more drunkard songs in 1974. I discovered that we had a handful of such songs. They were quite good songs and some of them were popular songs of their time. I am listing them below.
mere pyaale mein sharaab daal de (Ameer Ghareeb, 26.07.1974)
kabhee kholey naa tijoree kaa taalaa (Bidaai, 09.10.1974)
aa uthhaa le apnaa jaam (Faaslaa, 27.08.1974)
paise binaa pyaar fazool hai (Imaan, 09.12.1974)
dil se kyaa shai janaab miltee hai (Imaan, 09.12.1974)
main wohee wahee baat (Naya Din Nayi Raat, 07.05.1974)
peg ek lo duniyaa dekh lo (Paanch Dost, 18.09.1974)
ye laal rang kab mujhe chhodegaa (Prem Nagar, 15.05.1974)
main sharaab pee rahaa hoon (Prem Shaastra, 08.07.1974)
pandit jee mere marne ke baad (Roti Kapdaa Aur Makaan, 13.09.1974)
saalaa main to saahab ban gayaa (Saginaa, 15.07.1974)
uparwaalaa dukhiyon kee naheen suntaa re … aag lagee hamree jhopdeeyaa mein (Saginaa, 15.07.1974)
The censor certificate dates for the three movie i.e. ‘Haath Ki Safaai’, ‘5 Rifles’ and ‘Majboor’ were 27.08.1974, 09.08.1974, and 03.12.1974.
Or may be some readers would say enough of dipsomaniac songs with the song- ‘aur naheen bas aur naheen sharaab ke pyaale aur naheen’ 🙂 ( As we can see, the wonderful song ‘aur naheen bas aur naheen gham ke pyaale aur naheen’ could have been a great drunkard song if “gham” was replaced by “sharaab”. 🙂
We will have to check if there are more such songs from this year 1974. Anyway this year had some great ‘drunkard songs’ including ‘female drunkard song too. But I will wait and check for other years from this decade 1971-1980 before declaring 1974 as the ‘best drunkard songs year of Hindi Films’.:)
Other than this there was a Marathi song ‘maajhya navryana sodliyaa daaru, baai dev paavlaay ga’ which was heard frequently, along with the above mentioned Hindi film songs.. I guess that this ‘Marathi song’ was released a couple of years later around 1975-1976 or 1976-1977. This song is where the female (i.e. the spouse of the drunkard husband) is praising god who has given him ‘sadbuddhi’ to give up his drinking habit.
Since the state I came from is not a dry state the sight of drunkard people around was quite a daily routine in my childhood days. There were liquor shops all around and country liquor was sold like the figurative hot cakes. Moreover as the country “developed” and embracedglobalization ‘Foreign liquor’ outlets opened even in many small towns. So sale of liquor, both desi as wrll as foreign was a common sight in states like Maharashtra. The state I have been living for the last twenty plus years is a ‘dry state’in contrast (however, now some concession is given to travelers from others states and to foreign dignitaries/guests and liquor is available to them under special dispensation).
Consuming liquor may have increased in India 😊 for several reasons. Hindi Films on their part has left no stone unturned in glorifying drunkards. The typical excuse for being drunk in these songs would be ‘losing in love’, not getting true love, sacrificing your love for others, missing the beloved, separation from your beloved, etc. The lyricists of these songs took their job seriously as came up with lyrics that have left their mark in Hindi movies. In future posts I will be bringing some of these songs here on the blog.
For today’s post I have selected a song from the 1977 movie ‘Chaachaa Bhateejaa’. This movie was directed by Manmohan Desai for ‘Dreamland, Bombay’. It was produced by Baldev Pushkarna and M.M. Malhotra. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.03.1977. The cast of this movie included Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Randhir Kapoor, Yogeeta Bali, Rehman, Anwar Hussain, Indrani Mukherjee, Jeevan, Roopesh Kumar, Sonia Sahni, Dev Kumar, Durga Khote, Satyajit, Hercules, Tuntun, Keshto Mukherjee and others. This movie has seven songs written by Anand Bakshi. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The singers who lend their voices to the songs in this movie are Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Asha Bhonsle, and Kishore Kumar.
As the name of the movie suggests it’s the story of ‘Chaachaa and Bhateejaa’ who re-unite the family which gets separated due to a ‘well hatched meticulous plan’ by a lady and her brother. (An interesting review of this movie is available at memsaabstory.com, and those interested can enjoy reading it there to know in details about this movie).
The situation for the today’s song is simple and typical for Hindi films. The boy-Sundar (Randhir Kapoor) is in love with Pinky (Yogeeta Bali) and she also loves him. Sundar once saved Pinky and then she fell in love with him. Well, Sundar is the son of Teja (Rehman) from his first wife (Indrani Mukherjee) and Teja is not aware of that. Kiran (Roopesh Kumar) is the son of Sonia Sahni (from Tony played by Dev Kumar) and Teja (which is not the case, and Teja is not in this plan of Sonia (Sonia Sahni) and her brother Laxmidas (Jeevan). Teja wants Pinky to marry Kiran. Pinky invites Sundar to the party but before that Teja goes to Sundar’s place to advise him to keep away from Pinky. While Sundar’s mother has cooked a nice Tea but before coming face to face to face to Teja she has watched him from distance and just cover herself with ghoonghat. Sundar has noted it but keeps mum. Khan (Anwar Hussain) had already watched Seeta putting the dust of Teja’s footprints to her forehead and he very well understood what is happening around. Well, now Sundar getting ‘educated’ on the whole situations decides to go to the party and to pretend as a ‘spoilt brat’ he sings this song in the party to annoy all and disrupt the whole celebrations.
Kishore Kumar is the singer of this boisterous drunkard song. This song is picturised as a party song on Randhir Kapoor. Yogeeta Bali, Rehman, Sonia Sahni, Roopesh Kumar, Jeevan and many others look on with disapproval writ large on their faces.
