Chaandni Raaten – Song no. 6
———————————–
It is G. M. Durrani’s Death Anniversary on 7th September. So this duet by G. M. Durrani and Geeta Dutt is presented as a tribute on this occasion. G. M. Durrani and Geeta Dutt is a rare combination, only 8 duets are posted so far in the blog.
Famous simply as G. M. Durrani(1919-1988), I have wondered what is the full name. Now I find that it is Ghulam Mustafa Durrani. With the surname of Durrani, it was easy to guess his pathan ancestry.
Looking for info about him I found a very good article on the life and career of G. M. Durrani tiled ‘The forgotten great male playback singer’ here.
An excerpt :
This is what Manna Dey says on page 190-191 in Memories Come Alive, An Autobiography on competing with all the singers of the period.
“The male singers I had to initially compete against included Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh and G. M. Durrani. Rafi’s renditions were like an early spring morning with its varied hues and shades and appealed to me immensely. I had the opportunity of singing quite a few duets with him and enjoyed the sessions. Talat Mehmood was something of an aberration in the sense that he seemd to lack perseverance and abandoned his singing career prematurely for reasons that remain a mystery. Mukesh was tranquility incarnate. One could not have asked for a better human being, but it was rumoured that when training him to sing a number, music directors were hard put to conceal their impatience. Once he had mastered the song, however, none could find fault with his rendition. Durrani-ji had a mellifluous voice, but lacked staying power and failed to survive as a singer. To reach the heights of success, it is neccessary to be practical as well and this is where Durrani-ji fell short. I learnt a great deal from his failure. I realized that when a producer spends a fortune on his film, he expects everyone in his team to put in his best effort to make it a success. And putting in one’s best meant being ingenious and innovative, qualities without which an artiste is likely to get lost in the wilderness. That, precisely, is what happened to Durrani-ji and I cannot help feeling sorry for the way his career turned out.”
I have made a list of songs which I randomly found on youtube as one song leads to another with suggestions. I have found some outstanding songs this way , this song is one of them. This song was luckily not posted in the blog, though three songs from this obscure film are posted in the blog. Fortunately that the video of this romantic “joie de vivre ” song is available. It is picturized on Geeta Bali and Sajjan. Geeta Bali is easy to recognize despite the bad video quality. But for the male actor I had to see the other songs posted in the blog.
The song talks of happiness and togetherness forever citing the shining of moon and stars as the forever mark. Simple logic since the moon and stars have been shining since the beginning of time and are likely to do so till the end of time. Scientifically, forever is much too long for anything to survive. Since the experience tells us that all that begins has to end sometime.
The lyrics written by Hasrat Jaipuri are indicative that the tune was ready and the lyrics are written according to the tune. How can I say this for certain ? Because of the longish stanza’s, there are only two of them but the length is bigger than normal. The composition with music arrangements is reminding of a lot of songs. There are traces of three to four famous song tunes in this particular song. Even the prelude music sounds a familiar tune. The composer is Khurshid Anwar, who has 33 songs in the blog. G. M. Durrani is at 75 and both Geeta Dutt and Hasrat Jaipuri have crossed 500 mark in the blog. May be some of the kind souls among us will get the hint and help G. M. Durrani complete 100 songs in the blog soon.
Now I am done with the scores. So let us enjoy this rare ‘chaand sitaare ‘ song which is wasting some 3-4 tunes in one song, Sajjad Hussain style.

Lyrics
Jab tak chamke chaand sitaare ea
tum ho hamaare saiyyaan
ham hain tumhaare
apne milan ka saathh na chhoote
haathon mein aa ke sajni ee
haathh na chhoote
dil ki lagi ne rang dikhaayaa
chhaayi bahaar mere nainaa hanse ae
aaj khushi ke phool khile
dharti pe aakaash milaa aur
pyaar bhare dil ke geet chhide ae
dil se dil ke taar miley
jhoom rahen hain mast nazaare
raaten hamaari
din bhi hamaare
jab tak chamke chaand sitaare ae
tum ho hamaare sajni (saiyyaan)
ham hain tumhaare
sooraj chanda shaam savere
raat suhaani sab hain tere liye ae
taaron ki jhilmil tere liye
heere moti laal jawaahir
roop jawaani sab hain tere liye
aur mera dil tere liye
pyaar hamaara yaad rahegaa
gaayegi duniya aa geet hamaare
jab tak chamke chaand sitaare
tum ho hamaare sajni(saiyyaan)
ham hain tumhaare
