‘Kaanoon Kee Aawaaz’ (1989) was produced by R Kumar and was directed by P Chandrasekhara Reddy. The cast included Shatrughan Sinha and Jaya Prada in the lead roles supported by Prem Chopra, Asrani, Aruna Irani, Raja Babu, Shekhar Suman, Maneka Babbar, Maneck Irani, Leena Das, Gulnar Irani, Bob Christo etc. Probably, this is the only Hindi film in which Jaya Prada worked with her elder brother, Raja Babu (also known as Raj Babu).
The film is an action drama. An unemployed graduate and his advocate wife are happily married. The husband becomes a cycle rickshaw driver to keep himself busy as he believes in dignity of labour. Being ambitious, he falls in a bad company of a person through whom he starts getting easy money and eventually a life full of comfort. However, being honest, the protagonist stands witness against the son of smuggling racketeer involved in a murder. Soon he meets with a car accident and presumed dead leaving his young brother with his wife for his care. His wife brings up his brother who becomes a police officer. Later, it turns out that the protagonist is safe and has become the right hand man in the smuggling activities. His younger brother, now a police officer is after him to get to the boss of the smuggling syndicate. Later, both brothers fight against the criminal syndicate and eliminate them.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Raghunath Rai, also known as Raghu (Shatrughan Sinha) is an unemployed graduate who is happily married with Janaki (Jaya Prada), an advocate who has just started her practice as a lawyer. They live with Raghu’s younger school-going brother. After not finding any job, Raghu has become a cycle-rickshaw driver to earn money as he believes in dignity of labour. Being an honest and a straight forward person, he often confronts with a gang of ‘hafta’ collector who are a part of a crime syndicate headed by Darshan Lall (Prem Chopra) and his son, Surendra Lall (Maneck Irani). Manohar (Raja Babu) acts as a intermediary for the crime syndicate.
One day, Manohar while traveling in Raghu’s cycle rickshaw offers him a job. Raghu. smelling of his shady job, spurns his offer. However, when Janaki was required to be hospitalised for some life-threatening illness, Manohar helps him with money to buy the costly medicines thus saving Janaki’s life. Later on, Manohar entices Raghu to deliver a handbag containing some valuables to a certain person on the strength of his financial help during his need. As it becomes apparent later, the hand bag was given by Surendra Lall to Manohar. However, it transpires that the receiver got the empty handbag.
Darshan Lall suspects his son, Surendra Lall to be the culprit as he has a full faith in Manohar who in turn has a full faith in Raghu who has delivered the bag to the receiver. Fearing that he will be exposed, Surendra Lall kills Manohar while he along with Raghu were witnessing a dance performance. Surendra Lall is arrested. In the court, Janaki, the prosecution lawyer pleads for capital punishment for Surendra Lall.
Darshan Lall visits Janaki’s house trying to bribe her to withdraw from the case but she refuses. He then bribes Raghu, the only witness to the murder of Manohar to turn hostile. He does turn hostile in the court, However, Janaki, with many tricky questions, forces Raghu to accept that he has watched Surendra Lall killing Manohar. The judge pronounces the capital punishments to Surendra Lall. Later, on the plea of Darshan Lall, Raghu joins him as his right-hand man in place of his son.
During a shady deal being concluded on behalf of Darshan Lall, Raghu gets entangled in a murder case for which he is arrested. Darshan Lall enables Raghu to escape from the police custody. However, while escaping in a car, his car falls in a valley and he is presumed dead.
The story goes in a fast forward mode. Janaki has brought up Raghu’s younger brother, Sunil (Shekhar Suman) who has completed his college education and has joined as a police officer. Janaki has become a judge. Sunil’s college mate, Rashmi (Menaka Babbar) has become an advocate. Both are in love with each other, awaiting their marriage.
Police Inspector, Sunil has been assigned to smash the smugglers’ syndicate of Darshan Lall and Sunil is after his right-hand man, Raghu who is alive and has been carrying out successfully his boss’s assignments. As a first step, Sunil has intercepted a big consignment of smuggled diamonds of Darshan Lall who is upset with his big loss. He caution Raghu that Sunil’s next target will be himself. Darshan Lall suggests Raghu to kidnap, Sunil’s fiancé, Rashmi for retrieving his diamonds in exchange of Rashmi.
It dawns to Raghu that the police inspector, Sunil is none other than his younger brother and Rashmi is his fiancé. He refuses to participate in the kidnapping operations though he would help Darshan Lall to retrieve the diamonds. Rashmi is kidnapped and Raghu gets back the diamonds. However, Darshan Lall refuses to release Rashmi. Defying Darshan Lall, Raghu gets Rashmi released and drops her to his house where after many years he meets Janaki.
When Sunil returns home, Raghu surrenders before Sunil. While he was being taken to the police station, Darshan Lall and his men kidnap Janaki and Rashmi and both are taken to his den. Sunil and Raghu follows them. After a long fights with Darshan Lall and his gang, Darshan Lall accidentally gets killed on a trap he himself has set. Janaki and Rashmi return home. Next day, Raghu is presented in the court by Sunil for smuggling activities and for other criminal activities. The judge (Janaki) holds Raghu guilty and pronounces 7-year jail term. The film ends with Janaki meeting Raghu in the prison who assures her that he will be a good person after his release.
Despite being an action drama with lots of fights, I liked the film for the excellent performances of Shatrughan Sinha, Jaya Prada and Prem Chopra. The dialogues written by Rahi Masoom Reza for the intense moments arising out of the conflict of views between Shatrughan Sinha and Jaya Prada and the conflict of interest between Shatrughan Sinha and Prem Chopra are superb.
The film had five songs written by Indeevar (4) and Nida Fazli (1) which were set to music by Jagjit Singh. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, “Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishaara“, written by Nida Fazli. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for the dancer, Gulnar Irani.
The context of the song is that Darshan Lall (Prem Chopra) who runs a smuggling syndicate, has given a bag containing the valuables to his son (Maneck Irani) to be delivered to the recipient. But the contents in the bag get lost after he hands it over to Manohar (Raja Babu) with instructions to deliver to the receiver. Darshan Lall suspects his son who in turn suspects Manohar. So, he rushes to question Manohar in his club where a dance troop led by a dancer (Gulnar Irani) is giving the dance performance. Maneck Irani (bearded man) also dances with Gulnar Irani. Raja Babu and Shatrughan Sinha are also seen during the dance performance. After the end of the dance performance, Prem Chopra’s son calls Manohar to his separate room and kills him when he fails to satisfy with his explanation.
I heard this song only a couple days back and was surprised that this song was written by Nida Fazli and musically composed by Jagjit Singh who have been mainly known for their emotional and philosophical songs.

In IMDb, Raja Babu has been shown in the role of Ram Manohar Tripathi who is addressed in the film as ‘Manohar’. The man with Shatrughan Sinha is in the role of Manohar in the film. In fact, when he is traveling in his cycle rickshaw, Shatrughan Sinha once addresses him in his full name, Ram Manohar Tripathi. So, I take it that he is Raja Babu.
About Maneck (or Manik) Irani, his natural beard looks familiar in his roles in the film, ‘Hero’ (1983) and ‘Mard’ (1985) which I related in this film also.
I am open to further confirmation or otherwise of the actors under reference.
