Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Chal ud ja re panchhi ke ab ye desh hua begaana

Posted on: August 23, 2008

It is one of the most moving songs of all time. It was the first sad song that I became aware of as a very young child. I witnessed a real life situation in which two brothers had a fight. A few days later, the younger brother left the home forever, never to return. He had left a note informing his elder brother about his decision. The note also contained words of this song- “chal ud ja re panchi ke ab ye desh hua began..” Whenever I hear this song, I am reminded of that real life incident.

Coming to this song itself, It is a song that I find the most moving. The feelings of getting uprooted from familiar surroundings, because you no longer belong- this is such a feeling that words will fail the most expressive souls, but kudos to Rajinder Krishan, that he came up with perfect lyrics for the situation.

Chitragupta, who rarely got the opportunity to work in A grade movies ( even this movie was not an A grade movie) gatecrashed into the party of A grade music directors with this song, even if momentarily.

And how can one describe the voice of Rafi ? If I have to choose just one song of Rafi to listen to, this will have to be that song. One can see that he sang ths song with true feeling. Little wonder, that this song continues to move any person who is emotionally moveable.

Song- Chal ud ja re panchi (Bhabhi) ( 1957) Singer-Rafi,Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Chitragupta

Note- This song appears in three places in the movie, with diifferent lyrics each time ( except the intro). The lyrics that I have posted below mentions the parts at the appropriate place ( intro remains common). The video above only has one of the parts.

One very interesting fact about this song is that Talat Mahmood too has sung a cover version of this song. Yes, HMV tried to have cover versions of popular songs in those days, but the attempt failed because of stiff opposition. But this song managed to have its cover version recorded.

The video link above has the Rafi version of course.

Lyrics

(Intro)
chal ud jaa re panchhi
chal ud jaa re panchhi
ke ab ye desh huaa begaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi …

(part I)
khatam hue din us daali ke jis par teraa baseraa thaa
khatam hue din us Daalii ke jis par teraa baseraa thaa
aaj yahaan aur kal ho wahaan ye jogi waalaa phera thaa
ye teri jaaagir nahin thi
ye teri jaaagir nahin thi chaar ghadi ka dera tha
sadaa raha hai is duniyaa mein kiskaa aabo-daanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ke ab ye desh hua begaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ke ab ye desh hua begaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ..

(part II)
toone tinkaa-tinkaa chun kar, nagari ek basaayi
toone tinkaa-tinkaa chun kar, nagari ek basaayi
baarish mein teri bhigii paankhe , dhoop mein garmi chhai
Gham naa kar Gham naa kar jo teri mehnat tere kaam naa aayi
achchhaa hai kuchh le jaane se dekar hi kuchh jaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ke ab ye desh huaa begaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ..

(part III)
bhool jaa ab wo mast havaaye wo udnaa daali-daali
bhool jaa ab wo mast havaaye wo udnaa daali-daali
jag ki aankhon ka kaantaa ban gayi, chaal teri matwaali
kaun bhalaa us baag ko poochhe
kaun bhalaa us baag ko poochhe, ho naa jiskaa maali
teri qismat mein likhaa hai jeete jee mar jaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ke ab ye desh huaa begaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ..

rote hain wo pankh-pakheroo saath tere jo khele
rote hain wo pankh-pakheroo saath tere jo khele
jinke saath lagaaye toone aramaanon ke mele
bheegi aankhiyon se hi unki, aaj duaayen le le
kisko pataa ab is nagri mein kab ho teraa aanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ke ab ye desh huaa begaanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi ..

Translation

(Intro)
Fly away, o bird
you no longer belong here

(pt I)

your lease at this branch is over
your were a visiting ministrel here
you did not own anything here
you were just a tenant here
no one in this world stays here for ever
fly away o bird, you no longer belong here

(part II)

you built your accomodation bit by bit
you braved the vagaries of nature while doing so
Dont feel disheartened if your hard wok has gone in vain
it is better to give something than to take away something
fly away o bird, you no longer belong here

(part III)

forget your days happy memories
your happiness will be held against you now
this garden is not worth living as it no longer has a gardener
you are now destined to a life of misery
fly away o bird, you no longer belong here

your childhood friends mourn your depature
bid them farewell even if it is with tearful eyes
because you are not sure when you may next visit this place again
fly away o bird, you no longer belong here

Really moving song – credit to lyricist Rajinder Krishen and singer Mohammad Rafi. No wonder it continues to be my favourite. Thanks for posting.

[…] I thought that this movie “Bhabhi” (1957) only had one great song, viz. Chal ud ja re panchchi but with time I realised that this movie was full of memorable songs in it. By now I have discussed […]

really this song is very sestive nd sweet putting the hand on the painful vein.how beautifully it explain the condition of departing person

I like all songs of rafi da this song is my favaurite one.whenever i listen this song,i become very concious and mornful.this song represen those who lost their beloved on account of any type of dispute in the family.how pain creats when some one lose his shelter(home and family).really this song touches my heart

You are not the only one my friend, I have been listening to this song for almost 50 years, I cried back then, I have been crying ever since, this song will haunt me till my last breath. I am crying right now with real tears, and I will always cry for the times which will not come back. I hope the people who forced us leaving our homes are happy. I have left my home country(home town) four times. I do not know where this journey will end & I will become the part of my mother earth again. I can hardly wait to leave this coffin of life behind. A.Q.

Talat Mehmood sang a cover version of this song for HMV a few years later. You can find it on Youtube. Magnificient rendering by Talat, equally moving though not as openly dramatic as Rafi’s singing.

I am aware of the cover version. But we in this blog do not discuss cover versions of songs.

Atul ji, your write up, mentioning that real life incidence, moved me to tears as the song always do.
As rightly said this is one ‘all time greats of Rafi Saab’ !!
During posting at Project sites me and my colleagues always refer this song and the lines ‘toone tinkaa-tinkaa chun kar, nagari ek basaayi’ at the time of transfer to another project site (which was inevitable) !!
One can relate to the different verses to the different situations in life as beautifully expressed by Rajinder Krishan ji.
When my Father passed away two years before and I carry his ‘asthi’, this song repeatedly come to mind and give a free flow to the emotions that I underwent then and today again when I go through the song, your write up and the comments, I am ….

Even after more than half a century this beautiful song is very close to my heart as it is a timeless creation.
