I have heard this song many a times, without knowing which movie it is from and how it was picturised. I assumed that this song was sung by a housewife whose husband was sulking.
When I finally watched the picturisation, I felt let down. It was not a housewife singing it for her husband, it was a mujra sung by a courtesan for her client. This was one standard form of item songs in those days. Other form of item song being cabaret, typically performed by Helen.
Coming to the picturisation itself, once I got over my feeling of being let down, I had to grant that the song was picturised well. The courtesan, played by Bela Bose ( pahli baar suna hai ye naam) does well in this song. Her song and dance is as good as any I have come across in a Bollywood dance number. Dharmendra,for whose benefit this song is sung, goes to kotha and listens to mujra.It is a role that was associated more with Raj Kumar those days.
Most people have heard the song without watching the picturisation. And they are unanimous in their opinion that Lata has excelled herself in this song. She has sung this song with rare gusto and energy. Lyrics by Anand Bakshi and music by Roshan are outstanding.
Overall, it is a great song that has become evergreen.
