Darpan ko dekha toone jab jab kiya singaar

Posted on: September 21, 2008

Here is a Mukesh song from a 1971 movie called Upaasna. This song has Mukesh singing for Feroz Khan. The situation is that Feroz Khan has nursed Mumtaz back to health but he laments the fact that Mumtaz, earlier confined to wheel chair and now back on her feet, failed to notice Feroz Khan’s true feelings for her.

How does a male express his feelings to a lady of his dreams. The modern method is just to say “I love you” and be done with it. But that was not the way in Bollywood movies those days. Well, in bollywood movies those days, beating about the bush was often the way to convey one’s feelings to the lady of one’s dreams. Directly saying “I love you” was considered too crude and unsophisticated in those days. 300 words and 4 minutes were used to say what could have been said in 3 words and 3 seconds.

Moreover, while one needed to sing a song to convey the abovementioned feelings to his loved one, it was always recommended to have that song sung by Mukesh. Mukesh’s voice could express the appropriate tender feelings in an expert way. Indeewar has written a song using textbook Hindi words and Kalyanji Ananadji has composed the tune, but it is clearly Mukesh who is the star of this song. It is just another example of Mukesh’s mastery over singing sad songs.

Lyrics

darpan ko dekhaa
toone jab jab kiyaa singaar
darpan ko dekhaa
toone jab jab kiyaa singaar
phoolon ko dekhaa
unmein jab jab aai bahaar
ek badnaseeb hoon main
ek badnaseeb hoon main
ek badnaseeb hoon main
mujhe nahin dekhaa ek baar
darpan ko dekhaa,
toone jab jab kiyaa singaar

sooraj ki pahli kirnon ko
dekhaa toone alsaate huye
sooraj ki pahli kirnon ko
dekhaa toone alsaate hue
raaton mein taaron ko dekhaa
sapnon mein kho jaate huye
yoon kisi na kisi bahaane ae ae
yoon kisi na kisi bahaane
toone dekhaa sab sansaar
toone dekhaa sab sansaar
darpan ko dekhaa
toone jab jab kiyaa singaar

kaajal ki qismat kyaa kahiye
nainon mein toone basaayaa hai
kaajal ki qismat kyaa kahiye
nainon mein toone basaayaa hai
aanchal ki qismat kyaa kahiye
toone ang lagaayaa hai
hasrat hi rahi mere dil mein aen aen aen
hasrat hi rahi mere dil mein
banoon tere galey kaa haar
banoon tere galey kaa haar

darpan ko dekhaa
toone jab jab kiyaa singaar
phoolon ko dekhaa
unmein jab jab aai bahaar
ek badnaseeb hoon main
ek badnaseeb hoon main aen
ek badnaseeb hoon main
mujhe nahin dekhaa ek baar aar
darpan ko dekhaa
toone jab jab kiyaa singaar

I don’t know whether I have said this before but this is one of my favourite Mukesh songs.

I absolutely love this song. Superb voice of Mukesh, absolutely fantastic lyrics from Indeevar.

If I remember right, there are two heroes in this movie – the two brothers, Sanjay Khan and Feroze Khan.

Most of the songs sung by Mukesh tended to become very popular. And indeed, this song became very popular. It did not matter if the movie itself got forgotten. That way Mukesh’s success as a singer is phenomenal.

Another outstanding song where Mukesh elevates the lyrics. A minor note in that the second line in the mukhda is Phoolon ko Dekha Toone Jab Jab Aaye bahaar, not Unme jab jab aaye bahaar.
