Sachchai chhup nahin sakti

Posted on: September 21, 2008

It was one of the most popular songs of 1971 as far as I was concerned. And I guess one can say that for many other songs, that is how good the songs of 1971 were.

This song could be heard frequently on radio and loudspeakers those days. I knew that the movie was from Rajesh Khanna starrer “Dushman”, but that is all I knew. It is only recently that I have watched the video clip of this song and then I came to know that Rajesh Khanna goes to a kotha, gets drunk and sings this song.

Kishore Kumar in 1971 was at the peak of his singing prowess and he could do no wrong. It is difficult to keep track of the outstanding songs that Kishore Kumar sang that year. There are just too many. This song was certainly one of the most outstanding songs of all time that Kishore Kumar sung. Anand Bakshi’s lyrics and Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music make for perfect accompaniment.

Song- Sachchai chhup nahin sakti (Dushman) (1971) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

are haan …, sachchaai chhup nahin sakti, banaawat ke asoolon se
ke khushboo aa nahin sakti, kabhi kaagaz ke phoolon se

main intzaar karoon, ye dil nisaar karon
main tujhse pyaar karoon, o magar kaise aitbaar karoon
jhoothaa hai teraa waadaa
waadaa teraa vaadaa, waadaa teraa vaadaa
waadaa teraa waadaa, waadaa teraa waadaa
vaade pe tere maaraa gayaa, bandaa main seedhaa saadhaa
vaadaa teraa vaadaa, vaadaa teraa vaadaa

tumhaari zulf hai yaa, sadak kaa mod hai ye ?
tumhaari aankh hai yaa, nashe kaa tod hai ye?
kahaa kab kyaa kisi se, tumhen kuchh yaad nahin
hamaare saamane hai, hamaare baad nahin
kitaab-e-husn mein to, wafaa kaa naam nahin, are !
mohabbat tum karogii ? tumhaaraa kaam nahin
mohabbat tum karogii ? tumhaaraa kaam nahin

agarche khuub ho tum, meri mahbuub ho tum
agarche khuub ho tum, merii mahbuub ho tum
nigaah-e-gair se bhi, magar mansoob ho tum
kisi shaayar se poochho, ghazal ho yaa rubaai
bhari hai shaayari mein, tumhaari bewafaai
ho ! daaman mein tere phool hain kam, aur kaanten hain zyaadaa
waadaa teraa vaadaa, vaadaa teraa vaadaa
vaade pe tere maaraa gayaa, bandaa main seedhaa saadhaa
vaadaa teraa vaadaa, vaadaa teraa vaadaa

taraane jaanti hai, fasaane jaanti hai
kai dil todneke, bahaane jaanti hai
kahin pe soz hai tu, kahin pe saaz hai tu
jise samjhaa naa koi, wahi ek raaz hai tu
kabhi tu rooth baiti, kabhi tu muskaraai, are !
kisi se ki mohabbat, kisi se bewafaai !
kisi se ki mohabbat, kisii se bewafaai !

udaaeye hosh taubaa, teri aankhen sharaabi
udaaeye hosh taubaa, teri aankhen sharaabi
zamaane mein hui hai, inhin se har kharaabi
bulaae chhaanv koi, pukaare dhoop koi
teraa ho rang koi, teraa ho roop koi
ho ! kuchh phark nahin naam teraa, raziyaa ho yaa raadhaa !!
waadaa teraa waadaa, waadaa teraa waadaa
waade pe tere maaraa gayaa, bandaa main seedhaa saadhaa
waadaa teraa waadaa, waadaa teraa waadaa

Indeed, that is how I felt when I lived through that age.

Dil khush ho gaya ye gaana sunkar.
It was a very popular song – also known as “vaada tera vaada”. And a thoroughly enjoyable one at that.

Any idea whether it got a Binaca geetmala ranking ?

It was 4th in 1972 Binaca geetmala final.

Oh ho, what a fabulous number! And Kaka and Bindu’s chemistry was awesome. Here’s a little story about the song Atul, the link to the original article is at the end. Pyarelal notes about Kaka:

“We had an unspoken bond that continues even today. Rajesh Khanna was lucky for us and we were lucky for him too….. We used so many singers for him….but he would always request us to fit in Kishore Kumar wherever possible. I recall how Kishoreda was very reluctant to sing ‘Waada tera waada’ in Dushman and was insisting we get Rafi for it. We surrounded Kishoreda and Rajesh Khanna winked at Laxmi[kant] and me and told Kishoreda that in that case we would scrap the song. And he immediately changed his mind!”
