1970s saw the emergence of small budget family entertainers sans fights and violence. Amol Palekar and Vidhya Sinha were two of the leading “stars” of such movies. Two of their most memorable movies together were “Rajnigandha” and “Chhoti si baat”. These two movies can infact be treated as extensions of each other, that is how much these two movies had in common.
Both these movies had music by Salil Chowdhury and lyrics by Yogesh. And together they came up with some nice heartwarming compositions.
This song ” na jaane kyun” from”chhoti si baat” captures the feeling of a woman who lives in Bombay and a man comes into her life. She has to make a choice and there is this real chance that she may miss out on the man because of indecision/ shyness on her apart as well as on the part of the men.
Amol Palekar is that shy, clumsy (“bhondoo” in Hindi) man, and in this song he takes a crash course from Ashok Kumar on the art of impressing the fair sex without being nervous. It is hilarious but at the same time it is a real cause of worry for many men who lose out on befriending girls because of such Amol Palekarian deficiency in their personality.
The dilemma that the lady undergoes vis a vis Amol Palekar is beautifully expressed in this song. This is a class song that one can listen to and watch many times over without getting bored.
And before I forget, let me say what everyone must have already noticed. Vidya Sinha looks stunning as well as remarkably real life in this song.

Song- Na jaane kyun hota hai ye zindagi ke saath (Chhoti si baat) (1975) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD- Salil Chowdhury
Lyrics
na jaane kyun, hotaa hai ye zindagi ke saath
achaanak ye man
kisi ke jaane ke baad, kare phir uski yaad
chhoti chhoti si baat, na jaane kyun
jo anjaan pal
dhal gaye kal, aaj wo
rang badal badal, man ko machal machal
rahen hain chhal na jaane kyun wo anjaan pal
dhal gaye kal, aaj wo
rang badal badal, man ko machal machal
rahen hain chhal na jaane kyun wo anjaan pal
saje binaa mere nainon me
toote re haay re sapanon ke mahal
na jaane kyun, hotaa hai ye zindagi ke saath
achaanak ye man
kisi ke jaane ke baad, kare phir uski yaad
chhoti chhoti si baat, na jaane kyuun
wohi hai dagar
wohi hai safar, hai nahin
pass mere magar, ab meraa hamsafar
idhar udhar dhoondhe nazar wohi hai dagar
wohi hai safar, hai nahin
pass mere magar, ab meraa hamsafar
idhar udhar dhoondhe nazar wohi hai dagar
kahaan gayin shaamen madbhari
wo mere, mere wo din gaye kidhar
na jaane kyun, hotaa hai ye zindagi ke saath
achaanak ye man
kisi ke jaane ke baad, kare phir uski yaad
chhoti chhoti si baat, na jaane kyuun

I know not why
This happens in life
Suddenly this mind
After we part with some,
Recollect in thoughts
Those trivial things that were.
Those strange moments
That which is past
Now it does shift
from one hue to other
and sulks in the mind.
I know not why
Those strange moments
Without your being
Crumble in my eyes.
The road is the same
And the journey is the same
None for company except self
Oh my friend
I lost my way ahead
Though the road is the same
Where are those
Honeyed dusk
Where are those days?
