Tumhe yaad karte karte

When I first saw the video of this song, I was scandalised. Then I realised that Vyjyantimala was in fact wearing body coloured clothes, but still her dress must have been regarded as provocative by the censors those days. Or may be not, seeing that few people thronged to watch this movie.
The song is a semi classical song. And as happens with semi classical songs and dances, majority of spectators keep away. But as far as aficionadoes are concerned, this song is quite a fesat to the ears. One can keep listenng away to this song many a times. It was one of the last songs that Shailendra- Shankar Jaikishan combination must have created.

Song-Tumhe yaad karte karte (Aamrapaali ) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
tumhen yaad karte karte jaayegi rain saari
tum le gaye ho apne sang neend bhi hamaari
tumhen yaad karte karte jaayegi rain saari
tum le gaye ho apne sang neend bhi hamaari
tumhen yaad karte karte
man hai ki jaa basaa hai, anjaan ik nagar mein
man hai ki jaa basaa hai, anjaan ik nagar mein
kuchh khojtaa hai paagal khoyi huyi dagar mein
itne bade mahal mein, ghabraaun main bechaari
tum le gaye ho apne sang neend bhi hamaari
tumhen yaad karte karte
birhaa ki is chitaa se tum hi mujhe nikaalo
birhaa ki is chitaa se tum hi mujhe nikaalo
jo tum na aa sako to, mujhe swapna mein bulaa lo
mujhe aise mat jalaao, meri preet hai kunwaari
tum le gaye ho apne sang neend bhi hamaari
tumhen yaad karte karte
tumhen yaad karte karte,
tumhen yaad karte karte…..

Absolute beauty.
This movie had lovely songs, wonderful dances – and yet bombed at the box-office.
Maybe the public taste had changed and they were not into classical dance.
This was Vyjanthi’s magnum opus as dancer (she has always – to this day – considered dancing as her first love).
She was so shaken by the lack of public response for this movie that it hastened her retirement from acting.
I love the other songs of this movie. “Neel gagan ki chhaon mein” and “tadap ye din raat ki”. (Talking of sensuous songs, this must be pretty high on anybody’s list !!!).
