Daaman mein daagh lagaa baithe

Posted on: February 6, 2009

“Dhool ka Phool” (1959) was a moving tale about an unwed mother and her child. Mala Sinha falls in love with Rajendra Kumar and they have a pre marital fling, assured in the knowledge that they would get married to each other. But then Rajendra Kumar ditches her and gets married to a girl of his parents’ choice. And Mala Sinha, as can be expected, is pregnant.

This poignant song is sung in the background as the baraat of Rajendra Kumar passes through and Mala Sinha’s world had obviously come crashing down. The stigma of being an unwed mother would ofcourse be too much to bear in a conservative society like the society of India in 1950s. Not that things have changed much in the 50 years since the movie was made.

I know that it is just a movie, but the problem depicted in the movie is far too real to be shoved under the carpet and I cannot bear to watch such movies for a second time. I have not been able to watch movies like ‘Dhool ka phool” or “masoom” for a second time because I cannot bear to see the sufferings of the unwed mother as well as her child.

The song depicts the pain of Mala Sinha wonderfully well. N Dutta, by now a forgotten music director has composed a nice music on the lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi and Rafi’s voice is heart rending.

Song-Daaman me daag laga baithe (Dhool ka phool) (1959) Singer-Rafi,Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi,MD-N Dutta

Lyrics

khata ke naam pe kitne gunaah hote hain
ye unse pooche koyi jo tabaah hote hain
haay o
daaman me daag laga baithe
daaman me daag laga baithe
ham pyaar me dhokha kha baithe
ham pyaar me dhokha kha baithe
daaman me daag laga baithe
haay re haay

choti si bhool jawaani ki
choti si bhool jawaani ki
jo tumko yaad na aayegi
ik bhool ke taane de de kar
duniya hamko tadpaayegi
uthte hi nazar jhuk jaayegi
uthte hi nazar jhuk jaayegi
ho
uthte hi nazar jhuk jaayegi
aaj aisi thokar kha baithe
ham pyaar me dhokha kha baithe
daaman me daag laga baithe
haay o haay

chaahat ke liye jo rasmon ko
chaahat ke liye jo rasmon ko
thukra ke guzarne waale the
jo saath hi jeene waale the
aur saath hi marne waale the
toofaan ke hawaale karke hamen
toofaan ke hawaale karke hamen
ho
toofaan ke hawaale karke hamen
khud door kinaare jaa baithe
ham pyar me dhokha kha baithe
daaman me daag laga baithe
haay o haay

lo aaj meri majboor wafa
lo aaj meri majboor wafa
badnaam kahaani banne lagi
jo prem nishaani paayi thi
wo paap nishaani banne lagi
dukh de ke hamen jeewan bhar kaa
dukh de ke hamen jeewan bhar kaa
o
dukh de ke hamen jeewan bhar kaa
wo sukh ki sez saja baithe
ham pyaar me dhokha kha baithe
daaman me daag laga baithe
haay o haay

Thank you, Atul, for writing about my farmaish. This has always been one of my favorite Rafi songs, and I just love the lyrics in it. “Chhotisi bhool jawani ki woh tumko yaad na aayegi …” and “dukh deke hamein jeewan bhar ka woh sukh ki sej saja baithe …” says it all, the love, the momentary impulse which has led to heartbreak, and the lifelong suffering thereafter, while the man is happily getting married again, without a thought about her suffering. This must be one of the most moving songs ever. Rafi makes it even more touching with his voice.

As I said, the situation is so poignanat that I have not been able to watch the movie for a second time. That is how powerful this movie and its songs are.

I saw this movie recently – and also felt that it was close to real-life. This sort of thing happens all the time, whether it is talked about publicly or just swept under the carpet.

And even today it is a stigma – you can imagine how it would have been 50 years ago.

Sahir’s lyrics are powerful, as usual. He could really write strong stuff – as has been proven by his songs in Pyaasa, Sadhana, Dharamputra.
