Ham premi prem karna jaanen

Here is a typical showdown song between brothers, that was fairly common in Bollywood movies featuring Amitabh Bachchan in 1970s. In this song, Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna are the two bothers and they sing this song in a party called by their parents. Shammi Kapoor plays their father in this movie.
Thus, this song is a party song as well. Like most party songs of those days, this song takes place in the palatial residence of Shammi Kapoor. Every character in Bollywood movie used to own palatial residences those days- remember!
The picturisation is quite interesting, if one looks closely. Amitabh is dressed in all white and Vinod Khanna in all black. Thus Amitabh Bachchan is the good guy and Vinod Khanna is the bad guy. They will never wear shades of grey in Bollywood movie songs, never as far as I can remember.
The music is typically Laxmikant Pyarelal, and the tune would make you feel like dancing, but most of the participants to the party stand still like statues. If people have to go to party only to stand like statues at the parties even when such a racy song is being played, then why go there at all. I hope somesone will clarify my doubts as to why anyone other than the lead actors should ever go to such parties.
Majroh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Vinod Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan sing in the voice of Rafi and Kishore Kumar respectively, but Shammi Kapoor interestingly sings in the voice of Shailendra Singh. It is only in Bollywood movies that the father can sing in a much younger sounding voice than his sons.

Song-ham premi prem karnaa jaane (Parwarish) (1977) Singers-Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
kahen na dil ki baat sadaa chup rahanaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
pyaar ke dushman ko hazaaron mein pahchaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
apnon se jab thes koyi lag jaati hai
apnon se jab thes koyi lag jaati hai
himmat apni aur bhi badh jaati hai
ye mat bhoolo aise hi deewaanon ke
pairon mein zanjeer bhi pad jaati hai
deewaane zanjeer se kyaa darnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
mujrim ko pardaa chhupaa naa paayegaa
mujrim ko pardaa chhupaa naa paayegaa
chingaari ke khel mein jal jaayegaa
jalne waalaa aag bhi lagaa saktaa hai
phir to uskaa vaar bhi tal jaayega
ham to jiskaa vaar usi pe dharnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
aapas mein takraanaa kaisaa
arre aapas mein takraanaa kaisaa gaao milkar saath mere
mere liye to ho tum donon jaise ye do haath mere
aapke qadmon ke jaisaa duniyaa mein kahaan aaraam koyi
duniyaa mein kahaan aaraam koyi
aapki chhaayaa hai sar pe to kar jaayenge kaam koyi
kar jaayenge kaam koyi
ham matwaale pyaar se jeenaa-marnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
ham premi prem karnaa jaanen
kahen na dil ki baat sadaa chup rahnaa jaanen
arre pyaar ke dushman ko hazaaron me pahchaane

I still would rather look at a fat version of Shammi ji even if it is for a short dance then the faces of the “full of themselves” modern actors. I can’t believe how Shammi ji blew up in size between 1971 (Jawan Mohabbat) and 1977 when this movie was filmed. Poor guy. Fitness knowledge was so poor in those days! He should have had a trainer with a whip…
