Jhir jhir barse saawani ankhiyaan

“Aashirwaad” (1968) was an offbeat movie. And obviously, Indian movie goers were not ready for such movies. So there is little surprise then that the mention of this movie would draw a blank from many Bollywood movie buffs.
This movie was not for masses in any case. That was true for its music as well.
Vasant Desai created some classy music in this movie.
Here is a beautiful song sung by Lata. “Jhir jhir barse saawani ankhiyaan” is such a wonderful song. Let me admit that I never heard this song till today, though I had heard a few other songs of this movie in 1970s. Though I must say in my defence that I never got to listen to this song on radio/ loudspeakers, so I was never aware of the existence of this song.
This movie is a moving tale of Ashok Kumar who sacrifies for the sake of others and suffers. I have read the screenplay of this movie ( books containing screenplays of movies were published in 1970s) and from that I know that this song is picturised on Sumita Sanyal who is Ashok Kumar’s daughter and Sanjeev Kumar’s wife in this movie.
Harindranath Chattopadhyaya, who played a role in this movie as well, was the lyricist. Vasant Desai was the music director.
Having discovered this song, I cannot have enough of this semi classical song (based on Raag gaud malhaar). It is indeed a gem that needs to be brought back into circulation.

You can notice the interlude orchestration of this song resembles that of SJ. Sebastian was the arranger.

As per HFGK Vol IV Harindranath Chattopadhyay is mentioned as lyricist for two songs i.e. ‘rail gaadi rail gaadi’ and ‘ naani ki naao chali’.
It doesn’t mentioned his name for ‘Jhingaapur taakur taakur’ and needs to be corrected I think.
All other songs were penned by Gulzar.

I vaguely remember this song from my past, but I sat down and really enjoyed it today. This movie had some other good songs too, including the famous “Ek tha bachpan …”, but I guess the movie did not have one of the star casts required to become a box office hit. Thanks for the song, Atul.
