There are actors who are known for playing happy go lucky roles and there are actresses who are known for playing melancholic roles. How to make these actresses play cheerful roles ? simple, make them act in the same movies in which the cheerful happy go lucky actor is also acting.
Meena Kumari got to act in quite a few movies in which Kishore Kumar was also acting. And one must say it had salutary effect on Meena Kumari. In these movies she played happy , bubbly characters and as a result these movies turned out to be much loved movies.
“Naya Andaz” (1956) was one movie where Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari, acted opposite each other. And here is a lovely “chayageet” category romantic song picturised on the two.
O P Nayyar is the music director and Jaan Nissar Akhtar wrote the lyrics. This song is a beautiful soft romantic number sang by Kishore Kumar and Shamshad Begum.
This romantic duet somehow reminds me of another such song picturised on Meena Kumari in the same era. That was for the movie “Miss Mary” and I have already posted that duet song-“O raat ke musaafir”. In that song, Rafi and Lata were the singers and Gemini Ganeshan had acted opposite Meena Kumari ( Kishore Kumar was present in that movie as well).

Thanks for providing a working link to this beautiful song, Atul! This is a perfect example of what a romantic song should be – soft, dreamy, calm, unlike what I find passes for romantic songs these days – full of thudding beats which raise my heart beat too, along with my blood pressure, lyrics that I cannot make out, and lots and lots of people in the scene, all doing gymnastics and calisthenics! I am not sure I feel romantic under such circumstances, I am too busy trying to calm my racing heart! At least we have one site where we can go to find old romantic melodies, delivered the way they should be done. Thanks for this service, Atul!
