Jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho

In Bollywood movies, hero and heroines would traditionally meet in gardens and would be going round the trees, much like gorillas or chimps going through their mating rituals. Being more evolved than the apes, they would sing a duet while running around trees.
In 1970s, the lead actors became a little sports conscious and started meeting on sports fields also. Thus we saw Jeetendra and Leena Chandawarkar meeting on a badminton court singing “Dhal gaya din (thuk), ho gayi shaam (thuk), jaana hai (thuk) ” where (thuk) was the sound that their rackets made while hitting the shuttlecock.
A few years later, Shashi Kapoor and Hema Malini demonstrate their sporting prowess in other games. Both of them are seen dressed in chequered shirts and white bellbottoms and are seen walking purposefully towards a golf course, while singing this song “kahte darti ho dil me marti ho.. jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho”. A while later, the two of them are seen holding wooden tennis rackets and seen singing ( not playing tennis). this is in line with Bollywood philosophy where students, businessmen etc are never seen studying, managing their business etc – they are mostly shown romancing with a member of the other sex and singing songs.

Song-Kahte darti ho dil me marti ho..jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho (Trishul) (1978) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Khayyam
Lyrics
Kahte darti ho dil me marti ho
jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho
jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho
arre Kahte darti ho dil me marti ho
jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho
ho jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho
aankhon aankhon me muskuraati ho
baaton baaton me dil lubhaati ho
narm saanson ki garm lahron se dil ke taaaron ko gudgudaati ho
arre in sab baaton ka matlab pooche to rang chehre ka laal karti ho
ho janeman tum kamaal karti ho
chup bhi rahiye ye kya qayamat hai
aapki bhi ajeeb aadat hai
itna hagaama kisliye aakhir
pyaar hai ya koyi museebat hai
jab bhi milte ho jaane tum kya kya
ulte seedhe sawaal karte ho
jaaneman tum kamaal karte ho
mastiyaan si fazaa pe chahiy hain
waadiyaan rang me nahaayin hain
narm sabz sez pe phoolon ne
makhmali chaadaren bichaayin hain
chodo sharmaana aise mausam me
tabiyat kyun nidhaal karti ho
ho jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho
jab bhi milte ho jaane tum kya kya
ulte seedhe sawaal karte ho
jaaneman tum kamaal karte ho
he jaaneman tum kamaal karti ho
ho jaaneman tum kamaal karte ho

Atul, your remarks really had me in splits of laughter, especially the first paragraph! I remember watching this movie, though I cannot recall any of the songs. There was one nice song which was filmed on Neetu Singh and Sachin, but I cannot remember the words.

Hi Atul, I’ve been lurking around your blog for a while now but this is my first time posting. I really enjoy the format you’ve established and look forward to discovering more unknown/forgotten gems. Keep up the good work!
And I agree with Lalitha on the first paragraph, LOL. BTW, Lalitha, I suppose the song you’re thinking of is “Gapoochi Gapoochi Gum Gum” by Lata and Nitin Mukesh, the only song in Trishul picturized on the pair of Sachin and Poonam Dhillon (I believe this was her debut film). Sahir must have been in a playful mood when he came up with those lyrics!

Atul, I am not a new poster.
So I am an imposter ?
Sorry, PJ. 😉
This song is cute. The movie was pretty good too.
I also like “Mohabbat badey kaam ki cheez hai” from this movie.

Nice Song .. Also like , Yesudas classic from same movie – “Aaap-kee Meh-kee Hui Zulf ko kehte hain… ”
And “Mohabbat bade kaam ki”. Nice and interesting song. Genius Sahir praising and ridiculing love at the same time.
Shashi Kappor – Mohabbad bade kaam ki cheez hai
Amitabh – Ye bekaar benaam cheez hai …

Lyrics of intro lines
Aaj ham Ishq ka izhaar karen to kya ho
Jaan-pehchaan se inkaar karen to kya ho
Bhari mehfil main tumhen pyar karen to kya ho
Koshishen aapki bekaar karen to kya ho
