Chaand kyaa hai Roop ka darpan
Posted on: May 17, 2009
The Golden era of Bollywood music (1950 to 1980) saw many great music directors enrich Bollywood movies with their outstanding compositions. Many of them went on to have very long successful innings lasting for decades.
Then there were some lesser known music directors who did not get the same amount of opportunities. On the few opportunities that they got, they gave us songs that stun us into disbelief as to how such music directors were not given more opportunities.
I have posted many gems from some of the lesser known as well as forgotten music directors.
One of the lesser known music directors who has really caught my imagination is Ganesh. His full name was Ganesh Sharma but he was known by his first name, like Ravi and Roshan. And he was the younger brother of Pyarelal Sharma(of Laxmikant Pyarelal fame).
In fact, Shashikant ( brother of Laxmikant) and Ganesh (brother of Pyarelal) are supposed to have done much of the legwork for Laxmikant Pyarelal when Laxmikant Pyarelal were trying hard to make it big as independent music directors.
Ganesh in fact was the asistant of Laxmikant Pyarelal for a few years before he got an opportunity to work as independent music director . His first film as an independent music director was “Thakur Jarnail Singh” (1966) starring Dara Singh, Helen and Mumtaz. Though it was a C grade movie, the music of Ganesh was A grade. I have already posted a song from this movie (Ham tere binaa jee na sakenge sanam (Thakur Jarnail Singh) ) . This was followed by other movies like “Husn Aur Ishq” (1966), “Shera Daaku” etc.
So many of the most memorable songs of 1960s and 1970s were composed by Ganesh. Who can forget the immortal Dil ka soona saaz taraana dhoondhega (Ek naari do roop) or Dil ne pyaar kiyaa hai ik bewafaa se (Sharaarat) as also the playful duet Dil ka nazrana le o dildaar le(Chaalaak)(1973).
I have so far posted 9 songs composed by Ganesh. Information about Ganesh is very hard to come by. But I have gathered that Ganesh managed to give music in 16 movies in all, where he composed music for 87 songs.
I am sure that a good number of these 87 songs went on to become quite popular. I hope to post as many Ganesh songs in this blog as I can find.
It is my pleasure to present an outstanding song composed by Ganesh as the 1300th song of this blog. Yes, my dear readers, this song is the 1300th song of this blog in just 10 months. I try to post a memorable and outstanding song every time I complete a century of songs.
On the occasion of completing the 13th century, here is this great song from a forgotten movie called “Dhamki” (1973). This movie had Vinod Khanna and Kumkum in lead roles.
Here is this song which was quite popular in its time before it was forgotten since the movie failed at the box office.
This song is a duet, sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. Asad Bhopali is the lyricist. This song was picturised on Vinod Khanna and Kumkum.
What a song ! But then one can make this comment about many other songs composed by Ganesh. And I am proud to showcase the talent of Ganesh in this blog.
And before I forget, I once again thank all my readers, including those who offer their valuable comments as well as give farmaishes of songs. It is thanks to their encouragement that I have been adding one great after another at such good rate. I hope that I will continue to get the love, affection and encouragement of all the lovers of quality songs from the golden era of Bollywood.

Song-Chaand kyaa hai roop ka darpan(Dhamki) (1973) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Asad Bhopali, MD-Ganesh
Lyrics
haan Chaand kyaa hai roop ka darpan
arre roop kya hai preet ka aangan
preet kya hai dil ki dhadkan
aaha aaha Chaand kyaa hai roop ka darpan
arre roop kya hai preet ka aangan
preet kya hai dil ki dhadkan
jabse tum sang preet lagaayi
jabse tum sang preet lagaayi
hamko ik pal neend na aayi
raani ho raani
ho meri nas nas me angdaayi
doon main saari raat duhaayi
raaja o raaja
kahao na raat ki sari kahaani
rat kya hai neend ki chilman
neend kya hai hosh ki dushman
hosh kya hai deewaanapan
aa haa
Chaand kyaa hai roop ka darpan
roop kya hai preet ka aangan
preet kya hai dil ki dhadkan
aa haa o ho ho
aa haa o ho ho
aa haa haa aa haa haa
aa haa haa
raat ko apna chaand pyaara
ho raat ko apna chaand pyaara
mujhko pyaara pyaar tumhaara
raja ho raja
saagar ki hai jaan kinaara
meri jaan hai pyaar tumhaara
rani ho rani
aji ham jaante hain tum bataao
jaan kyaa hai saans ka bandhan
arre saans kya hai aas ka jeewan
aas kya hai chaand si dulhan
aa haa Chaand kyaa hai roop ka darpan
arre roop kya hai preet ka aangan
preet kya hai dil ki dhadkan
phir chaand kya are oop kyaa
are preet kyaa are dhadkan kyaa
ha ha ha ha

Information about Ganesh is not only typical but also very rare, which is not easy to provide ,hence Atul had done a great job , which shown his real affectoin with music , since very fews are aware about Ganesh who even after excellent talent , could not much populared, however about the song ofDhamki , I think that this song perhaps had enspired with a song of film Seema 1971, Waqt thoda sa abhi kuch or gujar jane dey, sung by also Kishore & Asha
.However lot of thanks dear Atul & be continue .

indeed a true gem.
There are 2 more songs which are also splendid works of ganesh.
1. Naino mein darpan hai ,darpan mein koyi-asha and kishore
2.sanchi kaho mosey baalama- lata and kishore.
These songs are at par with melodies which panchamda created in 70’s.

Thanks you very much giving information about the forgotten Music Director “Ganesh”. Almost all the songs from “Thakur Jarnail Singh” were melodious. One of its song “Sainya se wada tha, —–Bichhua ne dank mara hai ram” was really good.
