Mera dil jo meraa hotaa

“Anubhav” (1971) was a small budget movie which was not only different, it was in fact far ahead of its time. Not just the laymen, even the movie critics had yet to mature to appreciate such movies.
And guess what the critics commented about this movie ? This movie has an obscene scene where Tanuja is shown naked, was what they wrote. That is what many critics had written about this movie and panned the movie on this basis. Of course such scenes were something Indian public were not used to watching at that time, and the puritanical censors would duly snip off such scenes.
Old timers may recall it, International film festivals that were held in India those days were the only occasions when one could see uncensored movies in India. Movie critics as well as influential people would try to get passes for the screening of these foreign movies- not for the movie, but for scenes that were normal in western movies but were considered “dirty” in Indian movies.
This song is of course picturised with Tanuja taking bath in the bathtub the way one is supposed to take bath there, and I am sure present day audience will not find anything wrong in that.
She takes bath and she sings a bathroom song. And it must be one of the most beatiful bathroom songs in Bollywood movies. It is sung by Geeta Dutt.
I have mentioned it while posting other songs of this movie ( this is the fourth song that I am posting from this movie) that “Anubhav” was the last movie where Geeta Dutt had given playback. And the person who got her to sing was music director Kanu Ray. And the understated music is beautiful to listen to. This song was written by Gulzar.

Song-Mera dil jo mera hota (Anubhav) (1971) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD- Kanu Ray
Lyrics
lalalalalala hmmm
lalalalala
meraa dil jo meraa hotaa
palkon pe pakad leti
honthon pe uthaa leti
haathon mein khudaa hotaa
meraa dil lalalala
hahahaha
sooraj ko masal ke main
chandan ke tarah malti
sone kaa badan le kar
kundan ki tarah jalti
is gore se chehre par
aainaa fidaa hotaa
meraa dil lalalalala
hahahahaha
barsaa hai kayi barson
aakaash samundar mein
ik boond hai chandaa ki
utri na samundar mein
do haathon ke okh mein ye
gir padtaa to kyaa hotaa
haathon mein khudaa hotaa
meraa dil jo mera hota
palkon se pakad leti
lalalala hmmm
haathon mein khudaa hotaa
meraa dil lalalalala hmmm
hahahaha

What a nice song, and the music does not intrude into the song, but just provides the support needed, when needed. Even if I hadn’t seen the video, it would have conveyed the feeling of water. I think this is a great song. Thanks, Atul!
