Tu Ganga ki mauj main Jamuna ka dhaara

Posted on: June 17, 2009

“Baiju Baawraa” (1952) is full of songs that have gone on to become timeless classics. And I had not posted even one song from this movie till yesterday !

Here is the evergreen song “tu Ganga ki mauj main Jamuna kaa dhaara ” from this movie. It is sung by Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and picturised on Bharat Bhooshan. It is a boat song written by Shakeel Badayuni and music is composed by Naushad.

PS- While paying attention to the lyrics, I noticed this glaring grammatical mistake in this song that has gone unnoticed. It should have been “Jamuna ki dhaara” and not “Jamuna ka dhaara”. Grammatically, it is so jarring to have to listen to “Jamuna ka dhaara”.

Apart from this omission, which as I said has gone unnoticed, this song is one of the unforgettable iconic songs created by Bollywood.

Song-Tu Ganga ki mauj main Jamuna ka dhaara (Baiju Baawra) (1952) Singer-Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

akeli maat jaiho
Raadhe jamuna ke teer

ho ji ho
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
ho rahegaa milan, ye hamaaraa
ho hamaaraa tumhaaraa rahegaa milan
ye hamaaraa tumhaaraa

agar tu hai saagar to majhdhaar main hoon, majhdhaar main hoon
tere dil ki kashti kaa patwaar main hoon, patwaar main hoon
chalegi akele na tumse ye naiyaa, na tumse ye naiyaa
milegi na manzil tumhe bin khewaiyaa, tumhe bin khewaiyaa
chale aao ji, chale aao ji
chale aao maujon kaa le kar sahaaraa, ho rahegaa milan
ye hamaaraa tumhaaraa

bhalaa kaise tootenge bandhan ye dil ke, bandhan ye dil ke
bichhadtin nahin mauj se mauj milke, ho mauj mil ke
chhupoge bhanwar mein to chhupne na denge, to chhupne na denge
dubo denge naiyaa tumhen dhoondh lenge
tumhen dhoondh lenge
banaayenge ham, banaayenge ham
banaayenge toofaan ko ik din kinaaraa, ho rahegaa milan
ye hamaaraa tumhaaraa
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
ho rahegaa milan, ye hamaaraa
ho hamaaraa tumhaaraa rahegaa milan
ye hamaaraa tumhaaraa

hmm hmm
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
ho rahegaa milan, ye hamaaraa
ho hamaaraa tumhaaraa rahegaa milan
ye hamaaraa tumhaaraa
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
tu gangaa ki mauj main jamunaa kaa dhaaraa
ho rahega milan
ye hamaaraa tumhaaraa

Actually what is a “glaring grammatical mistake” was a well-thought out composition by the music director and lyricist. In the seventies I was watching this radio program in the evening (jayamala?) where in this was discussed. The reason why they chose to go with “jamuna ka dhaara” was to maintain the flow of the words, even though it was not grammatically correct. “jamuna ki dhaara” would have been a bit sudden and disjoint while. So, yes, in those days, songs were well thought out!

The hero is calling heroin as ‘Ganga ki mauj’ and ‘Jammuna ka dhara’ is used for himself (hero). “jamuna ki dhara’ is feminine and not fit to be used for hero. So it is correct usage. Moreover song is written in urdu not in hindi. In urdu dhara is masculine.

Link to the song with duet version at the end of the film :

” Tu ganga ki mauj main jamuna ka dhara ” never sounded jarring or grammatically wrong to me. In urdu “dhara” is masculine and “mauj” is feminine. Alternatively it could have also been “Tu jamuna ki mauj main ganga ka dhara”. Not wrong or jarring at all.

I had seen an article on such grammatical errors in film songs at songsofyore.com . I think this song was also mentioned as one of such songs. I found a few songs listed there, considering urdu grammar they are not so wrong.
