Chalo chalen maan

“Jaagriti” (1954) was a lovely movie full of nationalistic fervour and high hopes for the future of a newly independent nation of India.
The music of this movie was stunning. A few of its songs went on to become out an out iconic songs. Who can forget “aao bachchon tumhein dikhaayen jhaanki Hindustan ki” written and sung with such passion by Kavi Pradeep. Then there was another song eulogising Mahatma Gandhi viz “dedi hamen aazaadi bina khadg bina bhaal, Sabarmati ke sant toone kar diya kamaal”.
Here is another song from this movie. It touches a more basic sentiment, viz it is a song about “maan” (mother). This song “chalo chalen maan” is a song that is bound to touch the heart strings of everyone who listens to this song.
This song is sung beautifully by Asha Bhonsle. Pradeep is the lyricist. It was Hemant Kumar, who had created the soul stirring music of this movie.
PS-This song has a sad version and a happy version. So that makes this song a multiple version song.

Song-Chalo chalen maan (Jaagriti) (1954) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-Hemant Kumar
Lyrics
chalo chalen maa
chalo chalen maan
sapnon ke gaaon me
kaanton se door kahin
phoolon ki chhaon me
chalon chale maan
ho rahen ishaare reshmi ghataaon me
chalo chalen maan
sapnon ke gaaon me
kaanton se door kahin
phoolon ki chhaon me
chalon chalen maan
aao chalen ham ek saath wahaan
dukh na jahan koyi gham na jahaan
aao chalen ham ek saath wahaan
dukh na jahan koyi gham na jahaan
aaj hai nimantran san-san hawaaon mein
chalo chalen maan
sapnon ke gaaon me
kaanton se door kahin
phoolon ki chhaon me
chalon chalen maan
rahna mere sang maa hardam
aisa na ho ke bichad jayen ham
rahna mere sang maa hardam
aisa na ho ke bichad jayen ham
ghoomna hai hamko door ki dishaaon mein
chalo chalen maan
sapnon ke gaaon me
kaanton se door kahin
phoolon ki chhaon me
chalon chale maan

I’ll be obliged if someone posts an English translation of this song. What is the full name of the lyricist Pradeep? Is it possible to read his biography? It is very symbolic that in the movie this song is sung by a boy to his mother, but essentially this is a Prayer Song to the Eternal Mother.

I love this song. The lyrics are so meaningful in this song, and Asha’s voice lends just the right touch, even if they did use her voice on a young boy. This is the first time I am watching this video and I was moved. Thanks, Atul!
