Baalam tere pyaar ki thandi aag mein jalte jalte

Posted on: July 16, 2009

I have listened to this song and I liked it too, but all this time I was not aware about which movie this song was from.

This comes as a surprise to me to know that this song is from “Ram Aur Shyam”. It comes as another surprise to know that this song is picturised on Mumtaz ( and Dilip Kumar).

I thought that this racy tune sounded like an Anand Bakshi-Laxmikant Pyarelal composition,or perhaps S H Bihari-O P Nayyar composition, but no, it is a creation of that old firm of Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad. They have come up with this wonderfully energetic song.

it is nice to see Mumtaz in her custmary orange dress singing and dancing with Dilip Kumar.Later, she would be seen in several songs of the same and similar genre alongwith Rajesh Khanna.

Song- Baalam tere pyaar ki thandi aag me jalte jalte (Ram aur Shyam) (1967) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

ho baalam tere pyaar ki thandi aag mein jalte-jalte
baalam tere pyaar ki thandi aag mein jalte-jalte
main to haar gayi re
main to haar gayi re
main to haar gayi re
main to haar gayi re
ho loot liyaa dil toone meraa raah mein chalte-chalte
loot liyaa dil toone meraa raah mein chalte-chalte
nainaa maar gayi re
nainaa maar gayi re
o nainaa maar gayi re
nainaa maar gayi re

main hoon baawariyaa teri saanwariyaa
main hoon baawariyaa teri saanwariyaa
dil se jaanaa naa
aaj mili ho jaise akeli kal bhi chali aanaa
chandaa aur sooraj ki tarah roz nikalte-dhalte
main to haar gayi re
main to haar gayi re
o nainaa maar gayi re
nainaa maar gayi re
ho baalam tere pyaar ki thandi aag mein jalte-jalte
loot liyaa dil toone meraa raah mein chalte-chalte
nainaa maar gayi re
nainaa maar gayi re

daal ke jaadu roop kaa toone
daal ke jaadu roop kaa toone
dil meraa chheenaa
preetam toone preet jagaa di
chhed ke man beenaa
nainon mein bhar ke pyaar kaa kajraa
ankhiyaan malte-malte
nainaa maar gayi re
nainaa maar gayi re
main to haar gayi re
main to haar gayi re
ho loot liyaa dil toone meraa raah mein chalte-chalte
aa baalam tere pyaar ki thandi aag mein jalte-jalte
main to haar gayi re
main to haar gayi re

This song never fails to lift my spirits with its delightful lilt and the carefree note that comes through in Asha’s and Rafi’s voices. Naushad hadn’t lost any of his old touch here. Thanks for the song, Atul!

In fact, Naushad’s tunes were at their most youthful in late 1960s. But public tastes were changing and all old guard, including Naushad soon found themselves sidelined.

Lovely song. Lovely catchy tune.
You are right about Naushad.
Naushad always had a classical image about him, with heavy dose of Indian touch in the music. Baiju Bawra, Ganga Jamna, Mughal-e-Azam types.
By the 1960s, with Shammi Kapoor ruling the roost, music had also become racy and westernized. SJ, OP, LP were the flavour of the day.
So though Naushad came up with pretty decent compositions in e.g. Saathi, Aadmi and Ram Aur Shyam, he was overshadowed by the more popular MDs of that generation.

If I am not mistaken, Ram Aur Shyam was a massive hit. Huge.

I am always confused about “Ram aur Shyam” and “Ganga Jamuna”. All these days I thought that “Ram aur Shyam” was released in early 1960s.
