Dil dil se milaakar dekho

Posted on: July 19, 2009

I have loved this song, and recently I watched this movie. The movie was nice, and it was there that I realised that this song had two versions, one sung by Asha Bhonsle and the other by Kishore Kumar.

Kishore Kumar plays the lead role in this movie “Mem Sahib” and it is the only song that he has sung in this movie, which is the last song of this movie. The Asha Bhonsle version comes up earlier in the movie.

Both songs are Car songs. In the Asha Bhonsle version, it is Meena Kumari who is driving a convertible, and Kishore Kumar, who is unaware of city life, having just returned from a jungle where he spent 12 years doing “tapasya” (penance) in a sage’s ashram, is aghast on watching the roof of the car retracting back. He tries to get the roop back in place, much to the amusement of Meena Kumari.

Then the song commences. Early part of the song is sung in the car, and the remainder in a garden.

Kishore Kumar’s version comes late in the movie. By that time, Kishore Kumar has learnt about the ways of city life and that includes drinking, dancing, driving etc. In his version, Kishore Kumar daydreams of driving a car with Meena Kumari in the passenger seat this time. This Kishore Kumar version has something extra in it that has made this version of the song a much admired and loved song.

Rajinder Krishan wrote this song and Madan Mohan composed the music.

Here is this song in both its version. It is a gem !

Lyrics
—————————————
Asha Bhonsle Version

Dil dil se milaakar dekho
nazron mein samaa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai muhabbat kyaa
dil dil se milaakar dekho
nazron mein samaa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai muhabbat kyaa

ham tum se mile kuchh aise
milte hain do raahi jaise
ham tum se mile kuchh aise
milte hain do raahi jaise
hamko na chala kuchh iska pataa
pahlu se gaya dil kaise
kuchh paas to aakar dekho
dil tum bhi ganwaakar dekho
apna to banaakar dekho
hoti hai muhabbat kyaa
dil dil se milaakar dekho
nazron me samaakar dekho
apna to banaakar dekho
hoti hai muhabbat kyaa

rah rah ke ye sard hawaayen
ulfat ke taraane gaayen
rah rah ke ye sard hawaayen
ulfat ke taraane gaayen
ab to hai yahaan
phir jaane kahaan
chal dengi ye mast ghataayen
aankhon me basaakar dekho
ik geet to gaakar dekho
apnaa to banaakar dekho
hoti hai muhabbat kyaa
dil dil se milaakar dekho
nazron mein samaakar dekho
apna to banaakar dekho
hoti hai muhabbat kyaa

Kishore Kumar Version

dil dil se milaa kar dekho
nazron mein samaa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai mohabbat kyaa
dil dil se milaa kar dekho
nazron mein samaa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai mohabbat kyaa

ham pyaar mein kho gaye aise
pardes mein raahi jaise
ham pyaar mein kho gaye aise
pardes mein raahi jaise
ulfat kaa nashaa
jab ho hi gayaa
daaman ko chhudaayen kaise
nazren to uthaa kar dekho
wo teer chalaa kar dekho
apnaa to bana kar dekho
hoti hai mohabbat kyaa
dil dil se milaa kar dekho
nazron mein samaa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai mohabbat kyaa

lahraa ke hawaa jab aayi
phir dasne lagi tanhaayi
lahraa ke hawaa jab aayi,
phir dasne lagi tanhaayi
dil pahunchaa wahaan
dilbar thaa jahaan
to bajne lagi shahnaayi
dil mein to bithaa kar dekho
kuchh paas to aa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai mohabbat kyaa
dil dil se milaa kar dekho
nazron mein samaa kar dekho
apnaa to banaa kar dekho
hoti hai mohabbat kyaa

Yes, it is a lovely movie with lovely songs.

Apparently the tune of the song is based on Frank Sinatra’s “Isle of Capri”.

i think Meena Kumari was better in this kind of light hearted roles. Kohinoor and Azaad are examples of this too. i don’t know why she went the tragedy queen route?

The tune is roughly similar to the 1934 song, “The Isle of Capri”.
The trumpeter Nat Gonella was probably first to sing this song, with accompaniment by Lew Stone and his band. This is as far back as July 1934.
