“Bahaaron ke Sapne” (1967) was one of the very first movies of Rajesh Khanna. In this movie, a very young looking Rajesh Khanna was paired against Asha Parekh.
The movie is not remembered much today, but its music was a revelation. R D Burman, who had got a second lease of life as a music director after “Teesri Manzil” (A Nasser Hussain movie) got an opportunity to give music in this movie, which too was a Nasser Hussain production.
Here is a remarkable song from this movie. This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Asha Parekh, with Rajesh Khanna also visible in the picturisation.
Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote this song.

Lyrics
aaa ahaa ahaa
aaa
hmm
kyaa jaanoon sajan
hoti hai kyaa
gham ki shaam
jal uthe sau diye
jab liyaa teraa naam
kyaa jaanoon sajan
hoti hai kyaa
gham ki shaam
jal uthe sau diye
jab liyaa teraa naam
kyaa jaanoon sajan
kaanton mein main khadi
nainon ke dwaar pe
nis din bahaar ke
dekhoon sapne
kaanton mein main khadi
nainon ke dwaar pe
nis din bahaar ke
dekhoon sapne
chehre ki dhool kyaa
chandaa ki chaandni
utri to rah gayi
mukh pe apne
kyaa jaanoon sajan
hoti hai kyaa
gham ki shaam
jal uthe sau diye
jab liyaa teraa naam
kyaa jaanoon sajan
jabse mili nazar
maathe pe ban gaye
bindiyaa nayan tere
dekho sajnaa
jabse mili nazar
maathe pe ban gaye
bindiyaa nayan tere
dekho sajnaa
dhar li jo pyaar se
meri kalaayiyaan
piyaa teri ungliyaan
ho gayin kangnaa
kyaa jaanoon sajan
hoti hai kyaa
gham ki shaam
jal uthe sau diye
jab liyaa teraa naam
kyaa jaanoon sajan
hoti hai kyaa
gham ki shaam
jal uthe sau diye
jab liyaa teraa naam
kyaa jaanoon sajan

Memsaab did a review of the film. Almost all the songs were superb. Great film too except for the last 10 minutes which compromised it totally. Very atypical Nasir Hussain, grim stuff. Asha P looked really lovely. Fantastic B/W cinematography by Jal Mistry who got an award. Incidentally, this song was the only thing in color in the film.
Saw an interview with Shakti Samanta who said that after he saw Baharon Ke Sapne, he finalized Rajesh Khanna for “Aradhana” because he thought that Rajesh would be accepted by the audience as Sharmila’s son in the second half in the double role.
Another anecdote from Kaka is that he and RD Burman were flying together for this film’s premiere (to Delhi I think) and RD started humming something in mid air. Kaka told him to reserve that tune for one of his films. Some time later when they were doing the music for Kati Patang and having problems, Kaka hummed that tune which RD then turned into “Yeh jo mohabbat hai”.

I remember seeing this movie as a very young boy. The scene I remember very well is Rajesh Khanna getting disillusioned as fails to get a job after several interviews (there is a Rafi song about this in the movie).
The movie has a couple of other very good songs. Like “chunri sambhal gori” and the beautiful Lata song “aaja piya”.
