Maataa O maataa jo tu aaj hoti

In Bollywood movies, most sad songs are sung by grown ups. Typically a lady, who cannot meet her beloved sings a sad song, or a gent, thinking that his beloved is a “bewafa”, takes to singing a sad song.
It is not as if only grown ups can feel sadness. Minor kids also can be sad. Their sadness is not a result of failure in love, their sadness is much more basic. Think about orphan kids. A small kid missing his parents, especially his maa- what can be more painful than that ! Such small kids sure are entitled to have their own sad songs in Bollywood movies.
“Ab Dilli Door Nahin” (1957) was actually a movie telling the tale of orphan kids ( going by its songs that I have watched). And this song, where a kid remembers her dead mother, has got to be one of the saddest songs ever sung and picturised in a Bollywood movie. My heart really goes out to the small kid.
This song is sung by Sudha Malhotra and she actually sounds like a small kid in this song. She has sung this song superbly. Shailendra is the lyricist and we all know that he was a lyricist par excellence.
Dattaram is the music director, and in my book, he too was a music director par excellence, notwithstanding the lack of opportunities for him as a music director.
It is a superb song, which few people today may have heard of, but it is a song that deserves to be known better.

Yes, the song is painful to watch even though the song is over 50 years old, and this is just a movie. The song can certainly move grown ups even in this age and time.
