Mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re

Posted on: December 4, 2009

We are all familar with the blockbuster movie of 1975 called “Sholay”. Few people may be aware that a movie of the same name was made in 1953 too.

This movie, spelled “Shole” in English was not quite a multi starrer. It had Ashok Kumar, Bina Rai and Purnima as the lead actors. This movie, alongwith its music , has been forgotten with time.

Here is a lovely song from this movie “Shole” (1953). It is sung by Geeta Dutt. Lyricist is an obscure person called Kamil Rashid. Music direction was by just as obscure Dhaniram and Nareshwar Bhattacharji.

I am not sure about the actress on whom this song is picturised. It could either be Bina Rai or Purnima. Can anyone help me identify her ? Yes, she is Bina Rai. Thanks, Greta (Memsaab) for identifying her.

Song-Mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re (Shole) (1953) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Kamil Rashid, MD-Dhaniram/ Naresh Bhattacharji

Lyrics

mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re
aankh bhar aaye re ke dil bhar aaye re
mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re
mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re
aankh bhar aaye re ke dil bhar aaye re
mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re

pyaar ke hain jhoothe afsaane
jag dekhe jalte parwaane
jag dekhe jalte parwaane
dil ka jalnaa koi na dekhe
shamaaon ka jalnaa koi na jaane
lagi dil ki koi na bujhaaye re
aankh bhar aaye re
ke dil bhar aaye re
mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re

dil mein shole aankh me paani
hanse zamaana roye jawaani
hanse zamaana roye jawaani
bahti dhaare ye kahte jaayen
pyaar ka kissaa dilon ki kahaani
naao teji se jhakole khaaye re
aankh bhar aaye re ke dil bhar aaye re
mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re

ho ho
dil toot gaya hai
duniya se rooth gayaa hai
yahaan rahte hain sabhi dil waale
magar dil kaale hain sabhi ke dil kaale
yahaan rahte hain sabhi dil waale
magar dil kaale hain sabhi ke dil kaale
dil deke na koi bhi sukh paaye re
dil deke na koi bhi sukh paaye re
hamesha pachtaaye re
ro ro ke mar jaaye re
mera dil kabhi roye kabhi gaaye re

She looks like Bina Rai to me, but the picture is bloody awful so I wouldn’t stake my life on it.

Argggh.

I think that identification is enough for me. Chances that Purnima too would look like Bina Rai are quite slim. In my case, I just cannot identify actresses of 1950s unless they are Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Shyama or Nutan.
