When one watches a song picturised on Shammi Kapoor, one half expects the song to be sung by Rafi and the music to be composed by Shankar Jaikishan. And that is how it has been for much of Shammi Kapoor’s career during his heydays.
But there have been other music directors too, who have composed music for Shammi Kapoor movies. For instance, O P Nayyar, Kalyanji Anandji, Usha Khanna, and R D Burman.
It is difficult to imagine Ravi composing music for Shammi Kapoor movies, but he has indeed composed music for Shammi Kapoor movies. One such movie is “China Town” (1962) where we had this memorable song “Baar baara dekho hazaar baar dekho”. Another movie is the lesser known “Pyaar Kiyaa To Darnaa Kyaa” (1963). This movie had Shammi Kapoor and B Saroja Devi in lead roles. This movie in fact had Prithviraj Kapoor in it too.
Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Shammi Kapoor and B Saroja Devi.Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist.

Though this is not a very well-known song, I like it a lot. As for the movie, I think it was one of the very few movies produced by South Indian producers that Shammi starred in. I think he (and even Dilip, Dev and to some extent Raj Kapoor) had this “superiority” thing about them. Which is probably why South Indian producers went for the more easily available heroes like Rajendra Kumar and Jeetendra.
