‘Aadmi Sadak Kaa’ (1977) was produced and directed by Devendra Goel under his banner, Goel Cine Corporation. The cast included Shatrughan Sinha, Zaheera, Vikram, Sujit Kumar, Deven Verma, Padma Chavan, Ritu Kamal, Jagirdar, Sumati Gupte, Mumtaz Begum, Gayatri, Maruti, Pinchoo Kapoor, Dina Pathak, Agha, Asit Sen, David, Baby Pallavi Joshi, Master Ravi etc. The film belonged the genre of a family drama.
I had not watched the film when it was released. However, I had read its report at that time that the film had done well on the box office front. After about one year, Devendra Goel remade the film in Marathi, ‘Dost Asaava Tar Asa’ (1978) with Shatrughan Sinha and retaining the Marathi speaking actors of the Hindi version. Incidentally, his only Marathi film was the last film he produced and directed.
Devendra Goel (03/03/1919 – 26/02/1979) was born in Meerut (now in UP). His family background, education and his entry into Hindi films are not available online. He debuted as the producer-director with ‘Aankhen’ (1950) for which Madan Mohan debuted as the music director. This was also the first film for Shekhar in a lead role. The film was a box office success. This was followed by ‘Ada’ (1951), ‘Aas’ (1953), ‘Albeli’ (1955), ‘Ek Saal’ (1957), ‘Chirag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan’ (1959) and Pyaar Ka Saagar; (1961).
‘Door Ki Aawaaz’ (1964) was Devendra Goel’s first colour film with Joy Mukherjee and Saira Banu. ‘Dus Lakh’ (1966) was his first film which attained the silver jubilee. His other films included ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’ (1969), ‘Dharkan’ (1972), ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Kaa’ (1975), ‘Aadmi Sadak Kaa’ (1977) and ‘Do Musafir’ (1978). Incidentally, Devendra Goel produced and directed all his films except the ‘Do Musafir’ (1978) for which he was only director. Another feature of his films was that Ravi was the music director for all his films since ‘Albeli’ (1955) until ‘Aadmi Sadak Ka’ (1977).
Devendra Goel was married to Rajkumari Sadanah who was the sister of producer-director, Brij Sadanah, producer, Chander Sadanah, and director, Vijay Sadanah. Devendra Goel had four children – sons Ajay Goel, Jyotin Goel, Sunil Goel and the daughter Vinita Goel. All his sons have pursued the career in Hindi films as producer, director and actor and the daughter Vinita Goel as an actress.
The gist of the story of the film is as under:
Upendra Nath (Gajanan Jagirdar), the retired police commissioner is the head of a happy joint family comprising his wife (Sumati Gupte), his two married sons, Madan (Sujit Kumar) and Surendra (Deven Verma) with their wives Maya (Ritu Kamal) and Kamla (Padma Chavan) respectively. Both are employed in a 5-star hotel. His youngest son, Chander (Vikram) is doing post-graduation while his youngest daughter, Namrata (Gayatri) is studying in the college. Chander has been the close friend of one of his collegemates, Vandana (Zaheera) and now propose to get married with the blessing of their parents.
The story takes a dramatic turn when Upendra Nath suddenly dies on the day of wedding of Chander with Vandana. Vandana’s businessman-father (Pinchoo Kapoor) cancels the marriage. Both Madan and Surendra gets the power of attorney to decide the distribution of Upendra Nath’s property and assets by which they deprive Chander of his shares in the property. The household is taken over by his two daughters-in-law, Maya and Kamal reducing the status of their mother-in-law like an unwanted guest. Namrata’s education is discontinued as she is forced to work like a maid servant. Chander is not happy with his sisters-in-law and rebels against them for which he is expelled from the household. He takes the shelter in Abdul’s (Shatrughan Sinha) house who is the family friend.
Chander fails to get some good employment commensurate with his qualification. So, he starts working as a waiter in a high-end Francis Hotel run by Dina Pathak. During a get together arranged in the hotel’s restaurant, Vandana and her father attend the party. Vandana is shocked to see Chander as a waiter. She leaves her father’s house and joins Abdul to stay in the company of Chander. Due to hard and honest work rendered by Chander, Deena Mehta makes him the partner in the hotel.
In the other house, Upendranath’s widow is neglected by Madan, Surendra and their wives to such an extent that none of them has time to attend to her illness and the inclination to buy medicines for her. One day, Chander after becoming the partner in Francis Hotel visits to see his mother with sarees and gifts only to see the funeral bier of her being taken in procession to the cremation ground. After knowing the background from his sister, Namrata, Chander takes a vow that he would take revenge against his two elder brothers. In fact, he starts fights with them. Abdul restrains Chander against doing anything like that. Instead, he suggests that he should take revenge by competing with their hotel business.
In the meanwhile, Madan and Surendra have taken over the management of Gulmohar Hotel where they used to work as manager and accountant, respectively. There is an intense competition between Madan/Surendra on one hand and Chander in their hotel business to the extent that both sides indulge in sabotaging each other’s customers. Due to Abdul’s help, Chander is able to seriously affect the business of Madan/Surendra to the extent that they incur heavy losses with resultant high debt. Due to their inability to repay the debt, the creditors get decree for auctioning of their bungalow. With lots of cajoling by Abdul and also the realisation on the part of Chander that one cannot forget the nostalgic time he had spend in the bungalow, he clears the entire debt of Madan/Surendra and retains the bungalow. The entire family reunites as hitherto. Chander gets married to Vandana.
The film had four songs written by Verma Malik which were set to music by Ravi. Two songs have been represented on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘bastee bastee nagree nagree’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi. The song is picturised on Zaheera and Vikram.
The context of the song is that Vandana (Zaheera) and Chander (Vikram) are college mates and are in love with each other. They are used to play prank with each other. During a college picnic, Vandana has lost her purse containing money. Chander says that he saw it lying in the forest while taking a break. Now, it is night and she is afraid to bring the purse back. Chander challenges her that if she brings the purse back from the forest visiting alone in the night, he will become her slave for life. She does gets back her purse, of course with the help of Chander disguised as sadhu in the forest without her knowledge. On return, Vandana boasts among her friends about her achievement and asks Chander to be sub-servient to her as promised. The lyrics of the song represent playful banter between Vandana and Chander.

rahaa naheen dil par kaaboo
tod ke bandhan duniyaa ke ab
hone chale hain ham saadhu
ab hone chale hain ham saadhu
barson lag jaayenge bhaiyyaa
ugne mein aslee daadhee
isi liye jhole mein rakh kar
laaya hoon naklee daadhee
hahaha
yadi kunwaari kanya koi
sankat mein phans jaayegee
tod samaadhi madad karoonga
jab bhee wo chillaayegee
alvidaa..

alvidaa ae duniyaa waalon
kahaa sunaa bisraa denaa
mere hriday kee dukhad kathha tum

ham dhhoonee yaheen ramaayenge
bachhe bachhe ko bachha
ab saaree kathha sunaayenge

bhed jagat kaa chhupa hai swaami
aaj tumhaari aankhon mein
unpar aanch na aaye jinkee

[dialogues]

kal tak thhe jo bigde bigde
aaj hai apnee baahon mein
kal tak thhe jo bigde bigde
aaj hai apnee baahon mein
aaj hai apnee baahon mein
