Today Mukesh is regarded as a legendary singer who gave us some very memorable evergreen songs. But it was not a smooth sailing for Mukesh in his earlier years. The period of 1954 to 1956 was a very lean period for Mukesh when he had decided to turn an actor as well as producer.
During that period, singing offers for him had dried up and the few songs that Mukesh sang for his home prooduction movies flopped. Considering that the popularity of songs those days depended on movies doing well and thus prompting the record companies to produce records of songs of these movies, Mukesh was in a very precarious position. Records of his flop movies were not even being produced. Mukesh songs from “Mashuka” (home production), “Maan”, “Chandni Chowk” etc failed since the movies failed.
It was then that “Khaiber” (1954) came as welcome relief for Mukesh. This B grade movie had Kamal Kapoor and Nigar Sultana in lead roles. This movie had Hansraj Bahl as music director who was not known to be very fond of Mukesh’s voice. Still he used Mukesh’s voice in this movie. He also introduced a female singer called Madhubala Jhaveri (not the actress Madhubala).
Here is the most popular song from “Khyber” (1954). This is a duet sung by Mukesh and Madhubala Jhaveri. Video of this song is not available, but I am sure that this song was picturised on Kamal Kapoor and Nigar Sultana. The song was written by Asad Bhopali.
