Ashqon Mein Jo Paaya Hai Wo Geeton Mein Diya Hai

on:I had never heard this song, and indeed I had no inkling about the movie this song is from, but what a superb song it is !
This song, “Ashkon Mein Jo Paaya Hai ” is a wonderful creation of Sahir Ludhianvi. His simple yet profound lyrics steal the show in this song. Singer Talat Mehmood and music director N Datta’s task was made easier once such a wonderful poetry was written by Sahir Ludhianvi for the singer and music director to render.
This song is from an obscure movie called ‘Chaandi Ki Deewaar’ (1964). Bharat Bhushan and Nutan were the lead actors in this movie. No one knows about this movie, but I am now informed that this movie had some fine songs in it.
This song was a long pending farmaish by Lalitha, and I can only kick myself for not discovering this song earlier. Well, may be it is better late than never. There are so many gems lying there which we will keep discovering on a regular basis in this journey of discovery that is the discovery of forgotten Bollywood songs.
Song – Ashqon Mein Jo Paaya Hai Wo Geeton Mein Diya Hai (Chaandi Ki Deewaar) (1964) Singer – Talat Mehmood, Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, MD – N Datta
Lyrics
ashqon mein jo paaya hai
wo geeton mein diya hai
is par bhi sunaa hai ke
zamaane ko gilaa hai
ashqon mein jo paaya hai
jo taar se nikli hai wo dhun sab ne suni hai
jo taar se nikli hai wo dhun sab ne suni hai
jo saaz pe guzri hai wo kis dil ko pataa hai
ashqon mein jo paaya hai
wo geeton mein diyaa hai
is par bhi sunaa hai ke
zamaane ko gilaa hai
ashqon mein jo paaya hai
hum phool hain auron ke liye
laaye hain khushboo
hum phool hain auron ke liye
laaye hain khushboo
apne liye le de ke bas ik daagh milaa hai
ashqon mein jo paaya hai
wo geeton mein diyaa hai
is par bhi sunaa hai ke
zamaane ko gilaa hai
ashqon mein jo paaya hai

Atul,
I was thinking you should make a top ten list for lyrics. I think it is doable if you don’t think about it too much and just list the first 10 that come to mind. I think “Chingari” from Amar Prem would be on the list. And “kahin door jab din dhal jaaye” from Anand. And perhaps some Mukesh/Raj Kappoor songs from movies like Awara, Teesri Kasam etc…

I know this song through a collection I bought of Talat Mehmood. The lyrics are so beautiful and full of meaning – I wonder how one could chose the “best song” in those days! Sheer abundance!
Nowadays, I find even songs that are praised and perhaps have catchy tunes, the best that can be said about the lyrics is that they are not offensive or inane: the merely mundane seem to stand out.
But to lsuten to something that makes you stop and think, and want to pause and listen again to savour the words…one can only go back to these old songs.
