Achchaa hota jo dil mein tu aayaa naa hotaa

We are all familar with the names of music directors whose names figure in the credits of a movie. Sometimes, when one looks closely, one may be able to have a glimpse of the Assistant music director. When I look at the credits of a Hindi movie, I especially look for the screen showing the list of assistants and sometimes I manage to read the name.
It is a very interesting and rewarding experience. For instance, in many old movies of 1950s, I saw the name of Laxmikant and Pyarelal written as the assistants of Kalyanji Anandji, and on other movies, I found the name of G S Kohli mentioned as assistant to O P Nayyar and Master Sonik as assistant to Madan Mohan.
There are some assistants who managed to become successfull fledged music directors in their own right. Laxmikant Pyarelal are an obvious example. Ravi (assistant to Hemant Kumar) is another. R D Burman too was an assistant to his father S D Burman, before becoming a music director on his own.
Many of these assistants never graduate to the ranks of full fledged music directors, because becoming a music director is much more than just composing tunes. They need to interact with producers, directors, lyricists,singers etc and hey are required to be in the good books of the right people all the time.
Of course, their musical talent was second to none. IN many cases, their inability to get more opportunities was a loss not only to them, but to the music lovers as well.
Few people have heard of Chic Chocolate. He was an assistant of C Ramchandra and many of C Ramchandra’s wonderful western music based tunes were composed by Chic Chocolate. On C Ramchandra’s recommendation, he got to work as a full fledged music director in a movie called “Naadaan” (1951). He created sone nice songs in this movie.
Here is a lovely song from “Nadaan” (1951). It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Madhubala and Dev Anand. This sentimental song is written by P L Santoshi.
Listen to this song. The song is clearly western music based, which is not surprising considering that Chic Chocolate,a Goan, was a pioneer of western music in India and he in fact was hailed as “Louis Armstrong of India” by the aficionados of western music.

I have seen a song where Chic Chocolate (what a name!) plays the trumpet onscreen….wish I could remember what it is. Was v. cool though 🙂
