Raadhaa naa bole naa bole naa bole re

Posted on: September 11, 2010

When I was a kid growing up in Eastern part of India, Durga Puja used to be the biggest festival of the year there, lasting four days. And every evening, the Durga Puja organisers would organise a cultural programme where the locals were encouraged to participate.

Most people would attend as audience, and some intrepid souls would even volunteer to go to the stage and give some performance. Singing of Hindi movie songs was the most popular form of programme. sometimes the organisers would call classical singers, but there were no takers for such heavy duty stuff. Hindi movie songs it had to be, preferably new songs, as far as aam janta was concerned.

Cultural activity minded ladies would also participate, and they would sing songs that were popular at that time. I recall that in the 1971 Durga Puja function,Haay sharmaaun kis kis ko bataaun (Mera Gaaon Mera Desh) was the most popular song among female participants, followed by Bole re papeehara(Guddi).

There was one old song though, that was also popular and even listeners like me, who disliked old songs would “tolerate” this song. This song was “Raadha na bole naa bole naa bole re”.

At that time I had no idea about the movie this song was from, but I wondered why this song was so popular among girls, especially to be presented as a dance song.

Now, some four decades later, I have watched the video of this song and I have some idea. This song is from “Azaad” (1955). It is sung by Lata and this song is picturised in a very heart warming manner in the movie. I have not watched the movie, but from the picturisation, I guess that Meena Kumari, Bahu of the household, performs this dance in front of her mother in law, and her mother in law is delighted.

Watching a singing, dancing and happy Meena Kumari is always a delight to watch, and this song is no exception.

The lyrics of this song are taken for granted by all concerned, but coming up with such lyrics takes great creativity and I cannot praise Rajinder Krishan high enough for this lyrics. And C Ramchandra comes up with another memorable Lata composition here. This song was 16 years old in 1971 and now it is 55 years old, but the magic of this song endures.
