Haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan

“Ghoonghat” (1960) was a movie made by a South Indian production house, viz Gemini. It had Pradeep Kumar and Bina Rai in lead roles.
I have so far posted four songs from this movie in this blog. Here is another song. This is a sad , poignant song that gets played in the background while Bina Rai is seen wallowing in sorrow.
This song is sung by Rafi. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and Ravi composed the music.
Song-Haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan (Ghoonghat) (1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi
Lyrics
haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan
haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan
paas rah kar bhi hain kitni dooriyaan
dooriyaan
haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan
kuchh andhere mein nazar aataa nahin
koi taaraa raah dikhlaataa nahin
jaane ummeedon ki manzil hai kahaan
jaane ummeedon ki manzil hai kahaan
haay
haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan
shamaa ke anjaam ki kisko khabar
khatm hogi yaa jalegi raat bhar
shamaa ke anjaam ki kisko khabar
khatm hogi yaa jalegi raat bhar
jaane ye sholaa banegi yaa dhuaan
jaane ye sholaa banegi yaa dhuaan
haay
haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan
paas rah kar bhi hain kitni dooriyaan
dooriyaan
haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan

This movie was based on a story by Rabindranath Tagore called “The Wreck”. I used to own a copy of this book, but it mysteriously disappeared during one of my father’s transfers! Since I have forgotten most of the story by now, all I remember is that Bina Rai has been saved by Bharat Bhushan and he doesn’t know that this is his wife, whose face he never saw, but she knows that this is her husband – don’t ask me how she knows this. The movie had some very nice songs in it, like this one.

I haven’t read this story but it could be that the Bollywood spin made it regressive. Tagore’s stories were often subtle and it is easy to spin these things any which way.

this movie was a multi starrer with Bharat Bhushan playing Bina Rai’s “Bichuda” husband, Asha Parekh was Pradeep Kumar’s ditched lover, and there was also Rehman playing someone’s friend etc
years later we had a movie with a similar story line starring Madhavi, Raj Babbar, Rishi Kapoor, Sachin and Jaya Prada. going by the thought process of the modern generation this was a very 17th century story
