Chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen

Posted on: September 27, 2010

The pair of Rajesh Khanna- Mumtaz gave us some unforgettable duets from late 1960s to mid 1970s. These songs are some of the most loved songs of all time.

The final time when they were seen together in a Hindi movie was “Prem Kahaani” (1975). This movie was the proverbial walk into the sunset for this iconic pair.

Here is a memorable duet song picturised on this iconic pair. Rajesh Khanna is as stylish as ever, and Mumtaz, for a change is dressed not in Dutch colours, but in Australian colours.

The lyrics by Anand Bakshi are like limerics that kids are so fond of. If I love you, I will remember you, if I remember you, we will meet, if we meet, people will watch us, if people watch us, they will be jealous of us. To pre-empt all this complication ,let us take the easy way out and get drowned in the river- this is the substance of this playful romantic song.

For a pair that enjoyed getting wet in the rain, here they are talking about getting wet by another means, viz by getting drowned.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed this lovely song.

The end of the song sees Mumtaz pulling Rajesh Khanna into the river. Well, in India, people immerse their idols after worshipping them. Here the idols, having played their innings in Bollywood, are seen getting immersed in water. How very symbolic and how very appropriate. One could not have thought of a better way for this iconic pair to bid farewell to their fans, viz by getting immersed into water like idols are supposed to be.

Song-Chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen (Prem Kahaani) (1975) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

main tujhe pyaar karoongaa to teri yaad aayegi
teri yaad aayegi to
ham tum milenge

main tujhe pyaar karoongaa to teri yaad aayegi
teri yaad aayegi to
ham tum milenge
ham tum milenge to
ham tum milenge to sab log dekhege
sab log dekhenge to
dekhenge to

donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen

toone lagaayaa aankh mein kajraa
kyon nahin baandhaa baalon mein gajraa
toone lagaayaa aankh mein kajraa
kyon nahin baandhaa baalon mein gajraa
jo teri zulf udegi to ghataa chhaa jaayegi
ghataa chhaa jaayegi to paani barsegaa
teri zulf udegi to ghataa chhaa jaayegi
ghataa chhaa jaayegi to paani barsegaa
paani barsegaa to man tarsegaa
man tarasegaa toh
toh
toh
muft mein man ko kyun tarsaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen

baaqi abhi hain kitni hi batiyaan
baith gaye kyun pher ke ankhiyaan
ho
baaqi abhi hain kitni hi batiyaan
baith gaye kyun pher ke ankhiyaan
hamaare nain milenge to dil dhadkenge
dil dhadkenge to shole bhadkenge
hamaare nain milenge to dil dhadkenge
dil dhadkenge to shole bhadkenge
shole bhadkenge to aag lag jaayegi
aag lag jaayegi to
to
to
kaise dilon ki aag bujhaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
chal
chal
chal
chal dariyaa mein doob jaayen
donon kisi ko nazar nahin aayen
chal dariyaa mein
mein
doob jaayen

As usual, a lovely introduction to the song Atul. I don’t know whether you were aware of this but according to my friend AJ (see his comment on Memsaab’s review of ‘Prem Kahani’), in an interview that Mumtaz did with the BBC in the 1980s, she mentioned that this song ‘Chal Dariya Mein Doob Jaye’ was actually the very last scene that she acted in before her marriage and retirement from movies. So your last para. was bang on 🙂

We miss you Mumu and Kaka and wish you all the very best and many thanks for the many pleasurable hours we have spent watching you on screen. And many thanks, of course, to you Atul for keeping their (and many others’) memories alive.

Really, I was not aware. So I was right, inadvertently of course, about this being a very appropriate way for the duo to bow out of limelight.

Full of Atulisms. 🙂
