There are some Hindi movie songs that become so popular that they get adopted as part of life. For instance, many prayers in Hindi movies have actually become school prayers as well as prayers during religious festivals. Then there are lullabies in Hindi movies that have become integral part of the growing up process of generations of kids in India. Then there are patriotic songs from the movies that are hugely popular and are invariable played during days of national importance ( viz.independence day and republic day).
Another field of activity that has been influenced a lot by Hindi movie songs is Indian weddings.
Tunes of popular songs, even though they are not really wedding songs get played by bands that are employed by the baaraat parties. Then , there are songs in Hindi moviees that are wedding songs and they have become integral part of Indian weddings. Some of these songs in fact have gone on to become iconic songs.
Since Indian weddings are elaborate affairs, so we have wedding songs that touch different aspects of it. We have wedding songs from the point of view of the groom, and then we have wedding songs from the point of view of the bride.
Here is a popular wedding song from the point of view of the bride and her sahelis. This song is from “Shagoon” (1964). It is sung by Jagjeet Kaur and chorus. The picturisation shows Waheeda Rehman getting ready as a bride and her female companions singing this song. The picturisation obviously shows a Punjabi style wedding and this shows what is commonly called “women’s song” ceremony. Yes, Indian weddings actually has lots of singing involved, especially by women, and the songs created in Hindi movies come quite handy for such purposes.
Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and he has come up with a wonderful song, as can be seen from the lyrics. Khayyam, the husband of Jagjit Kaur the singer, is the music director.
This movie shows Waheeda Rehman getting married to Kanwaljeet Singh. In reality too, the two got married to each other after this movie. So that way, this was a case of a reel life wedding turning real life wedding for the two of them.
Here is this superb mahila sangeet wedding song from “Shagoon” (1964).

Lyrics
gori sasuraal chali
doli saj gayi shagunon(?) waali
gori sasuraal chali
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
doli saj gayi shagunon(?) waali
gori sasuraal chali
ho ho ho
duniya cham cham chamke
aha
paayal cham cham chanke
aha
joda chamak dikhaaye
waah waah
gazra mahak lutaaye
oho
phadke ang badan ke
jodaa laal pahan ke
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
doli saj gayi shagunon(?) waali
gori sasuraal chali
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
ho ho ho
aayi ghadi milan ki
aha
kaliyaa khil gayin man ki
aha
gori raaj karegi
waah waah
sukh se god bharegi
sakhiyaan de len badhaayi
baaj rahi shehnaayi
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
doli saj gayi shagunon(?) waali
gori sasuraal chali
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
ho ho ho
jaadoo daar ke chhab ka
aha
man mohegi sabkaa
aha
nanad balaayen legi
waah waah
saas duaayen degi
oho
chhoo kar paaon sasur ke
bhaag tu gaayegi ghar ke
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
doli saj gayi shagunon(?) waali
gori sasuraal chali
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali
doli saj gayi shagunon(?) waali
gori sasuraal chali
dekho dekho jee
gori sasuraal chali

Atul ji,
There is a small correction.
Waheeda got married to Kanwaljeet Singh only in 1974,almost 10 years after the movie Shagun. After marriage they settled in Bangalore,as he was a businessman.Waheeda raised children and also promoted a special brand of Breakfast cereal for husband’s company.
She continued to do films selectively in 70s and 80s,many with Big B.
