Ab tere siwaa kaun mera Krishan Kanhaiyya

Posted on: May 10, 2011

“Kismat” (1943) was the first ever multistarrer Hindi movie. It had Ashok Kumar and Mumtaz Shanti in lead roles.

Music of this movie played a huge role in the success of this movie. A few songs from this movie are popular to this day.

I have discussed as many as three songs from this movie. Here is another song from this movie. This song is a Bhajan. The song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki. The picturisation shows Mumtaz Shanti praying to Lord Krishna at her home.

Pradeep is the lyricist and Anil Biswas is the music director. This must be one of the very first songs of this genre where movie characters would seek divine intervention to overcome problems in their lives.

Song-Ab tere siwaa kaun mera Krishan Kanhaiyya (Kismat) (1943) Singer-Amirbai Karnataki, Lyrics-Pradeep, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

Atul ji,
For today’s generation,Kismat may not ring any bells.
So far there have been 6 movies by the name Kismat.(1932-43-56-68-80 and1995).There are a dozen movies with Kismat in their titles.
This KISMAT(1943) was a real blockbuster of those days. A successive 4th successful film from Bombay Talkies after Kangan,Bandhan and Jhoola,it gave Shashadhar Mukherjee, the producer encouragement to establish Filmistan Studio on his own.
Kismat was the story of Shekhar(A.Kumar)-a pickpocket and Rani(Mumtaj Shanti),using the Lost and found formula.Ashok kumar, the pickpocket happens to be the long lost son of Indrajit-the Villain. There was a subplot of lovestory of Shekhar’s brother and Rani’s sister.
Filled with robbery, fights, escape, mysteries, love songs, drama and happy ending with a group photo in the last made KISMAT such a popular film that in those days it ran continuously for 3 years in one theatre in Calcutta. It broke all records of Box office. It was estimated that it grossed a total of more than 10 million(ONE CRORE) in early forties.By today’s value it must be over 100 crores easily,in those days.
It was said that KISMAT was a copy of John Ccomwell’s ALGIERS(1938).
Two scenes, one of Hero’s escape from jail under a smoke screen and Robbery of Gold and Money by Hero almost at the last part of the movie, were the highlights.
Lilting and enchanting music played an important part in its success.

Arun ji,

This movie is a great favorite of mine. It’s huge success made it a trendsetter. With all kinds of variations in plot and sub plots, there are so many movies that are based on the lost-and-found formula of this movie.

But besides being a formula movie, this movie is a great original lesson in human relationships and human values. After being subjected to many imitations over the decades, watching this movie may seem so very predictable – “oh well, so I know what the next scene will be”. But try to view this movie, thinking of the original period in which this was released. And one will realize why it was such a wonderful success.

Sudhir ji,
Very true indeed !
Kismat is one of the 10 all time favourites of mine too ! Just few years back I happened to see this movie(outside India) and I was thrilled no less than I was thrilled the first time I had seen this movie. This originall has been duplicated, copied and imitated,in parts, several times but the original is original and shall always remain so.
