Now a days, electronic gizmos do not merit a second look. Every household now a days have itms like TV, computers, mobile phones etc.
Just a few decades ago,the only electronic equipment that most Indian households had was a radio. And it occupied a pride of place in the household.
Here is a Radio Song from a very old movie called “Ghar Ki Izzat” (1948). A young boy (any idea who he is ?) comes to visit his sister (Mumtaz Shanti) and brother in law (Jeewan) and he quite impressed by their spacious home. What is that dabba ? He asks.
It is a radio. Want to listen to it ? She asks and switches it on.
And the radio has this song playing in it.
This song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki. I C Kapoor is the lyricist. Pt Govindram is the music director.
I stumbled upon this rare gem only just now and I loved listening to it.
Towards the end of the song, someone comes to the room and informs them that “Mataji is getting annoyed and she wants the radio to be switched off.”. There you are ! 🙂 Even back then we had people who had no appreciation of good music.
Fortunately, we will not be asked to close the page,while we decide to savour this lovely song now. Or is it really so ! Your spouse (if you have one) could well come over to you and tell you that she is getting annoyed because of your constantly poring over the screen going through the contents of some silly blog. 🙂

Atul ji,
As I am searching the net for more information about this song, I came across the following info on Sh. Surjit Singh’s blog on Hindi music. His summary of 1938 Hindi movies and music is posted at http://hindi-films-songs.com/articles/1938.html. In this summary, with reference to this song itself, he has stated that Amir Jaan and Amirbai Karnataki are the same person.
I am familiar with this blog for some time, and do respect his collection of music from old Hindi films, and his knowledge and information about them. However, I will continue to search for another confirmation.

I wrote to Surjit Singh ji, and he was kind enough to respond back promptly.
This song is indeed sung by Ameebai Karnataki. In the Geet Kosh, however, her name is listed as Amir Jaan, since the original record label carries that name. (He suggests that Geet Kosh entry should be annotated with the comment that it is Amirbai Karnataki). He also acknowledges the fact that there is another singer in the same period, by the Ameer Jan, and hence it might lead to some confusion.

Sorry to be a nukta-cheen, but in the second stanza, “ro kar bhi mere dil ke” should be modified to “ro kar hi mere dil ke”

The music director’s tag needs to be corrected to Sunda Das since the song was originally composed by him for the film ‘Zamaana’ (1938).

What a wonderful find, and such soulful singing. This song is really a rare masterpiece.
However, something prompted me to trace the details of this song. And here is what I find. This song is not from the film Ghar Ki Izzat. In reality, this song is from another movie, but is played as an actual radio broadcast in this movie. Most likely, the makers of Ghar Ki Izzat opted to play this song to display a real world situation.
The actual details of this song are as follows. This song is from the movie Zamaanaa (1938). The music is by Sunder Das aka Sunder Das Bhatia. The lyrics are by DN Madhok, and the singing voice is listed as that of Amir Jaan. I am not certain if Amir Jaan and Amirbai Karnataki are the same person. In the movie listings, both names appear contemporously in the late 1930s.
In the song listings, there is an annotation and acknowledgement that this song is played on the radio in the movie Ghar Ki Izzat.

Thanks for this useful information. If this song is originally from “Zamaanaa” (1938) then I need to find the song from this movie and post that. Then this song can be used as a footnote for that song.
Amir Jaan and Amirbai Karnataki must be different singers. Just because the name has Amir in it, there are people who jump to the conclusion that the singer must be Amirbai Karnataki.
Incidentally, there is much disinformation going on in internet about the singer of this song. In lots of sites, Zohrabai Ambalewaali is cited as the singer.
