“Do Behnen”(1959) is a movie that few people are aware of. It is this movie that had one of the iconic Pradeep songs viz Mukhdaa dekh le praani zaraa darpan mein .
This movie in fact has some very nice songs in it which deserve to be better known among music lovers.
In Hindi movies, we often have one actor playing double role- one is “good” and other is “bad”. Typically only one of them ,viz the “good” one sings songs.
In this movie, Shyama plays double roles. The “good” Shyama is a God fearing traditional girl who would devote all his time singing Bhajans. The “bad” Shyama wears western clothes and goes to parties.
Here is a unique song in which both Shyamas are shown singing. The “good” Shyama is singing a Bhajan and the “bad” Shyama is singing a song on a faster beat. Just like Shyama plays a double role in acting, Lata plays a double role in singing. Yes, Lata sings for both characters and switches from one character to another expertly, often in a matter of one line.
It may be difficult to believe, but such a light hearted song is written and composed by artists who are normally associated with more serious stuff. Yes, this light hearted song is penned by Pradeep. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.

Atul ji,
DO BEHNEN(1959) was not very popular,but the story was quite interesting after the interval.
Produced under Brij Kala Mandir Banner,by J.P.Sehgal and Kailash Kapoor,it was Directed by Kidar Sharma on a story,s/p and dialogues by Pt.Mukhram Sharma.
Shyama,Rajendrakumar,Chand Usmani,Tiwari,Leela Mishra,Radhakishen,Ram Mohan,Miss Mumtaz etc. were part of the cast.
Vasanti was a home loving,God fearing,obidient girl,while Malati was,extrovert,club hopping,modern girl.Vasanti gets married to Ramesh(Rajendra kumar) and goes to Bombay,where she happily lives with inlaws.Malati gets hooked byAnokhelal(Tiwari),elopes with him and ruins her life.When Vasanti and her mother go to fetch Malati,Vasanti dies in an accident.The mother declares Malati as dead and prepares and sends Malati as Vasanti to Ramesh.
The rest of the story details how Malati mends her ways,how Anokhelal haunts her and how everything becomes well at the end.
