Maanjhi meri qismat ke

Posted on: July 4, 2011

Here is a lovely “maanjhi”(boatman) song with a difference. The song is very much a boat song, in the sense that Asha Parekh, looking young and pretty, is standing on a boat in a river and singer this song. And she is singing about “maanjhi”, but here “maanjhi” does not mean the boatman, but it means the man who will steer her destiny. Yes, she is singing this song about her beloved (Sunil Dutt).

This lovely song, where one’s beloved is likened to a boatman taking them together in the journey of life, is written by Manohar Lal Khanna. Lata is the singer and the soft, gentle music accompanying the song is composed by Usha Khanna.

I became aware of this lovely song from Ham Hindustani” (1960) thanks to its lyrics sent to me by Prakashchandra. He says that this song comes to his mind every night while sleeping and serves as a lullaby. Indeed, this is a soothing song, and if a lady sings a soothing song like this to her beloved then he may indeed feel like going to sleep. Or my be not.

It is unfortunate that this song has been forgotten with time. This is such a nice and lovely song to listen to. I listened to this song for the first time only just now, and I am bowled over by this composition.

maanjhi meri qismet ke
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
maanjhi meri qismet ke,
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
chaahe jahaan le chal
aa aa aa
aa aa aa

ye sunehri shaam aayee,
rang lekar pyaar ka
ab pata mujhko chala hai,
apni pehli haar ka
apni pehli haar ka
keh sakey na saamne hum,
keh rahe hain door se
ho gaye hum dil ke haathon
ab to kuchh majboor se
maanjhi meri qismet ke ,
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
chaahe jahaan le chal
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa

tu hi mere dil ki manzil,
tu hi mera humsafar
zindagi se badhke mujhko,
teri ik meethhi nazar
teri ik meethhi nazar
teri aankhon mein rahoon main
tu mere dil mein rahe
zindagi bhar pyaar ki
ye naao aise hi bahey
maanjhi meri qismet ke
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
maanjhi meri qismet ke,
jee chaahe jahaan le chal
chaahe jahaan le chal

”Usha Khanna” is the name of pure ELEGANCE.
Most of her compositions bear this trademark of elegance cum delicacy. We feel nothing overdone or under done in her songs- majority of her songs move as smooth as a silk cocoon. That’s why she succeeded immensely at a plateform & at a time when HFM was completely dominated by male composers.
There are a few of her elegant compositions that didn’t click commercially or didn’t get popularity, on the other hand few that lacked that sting of her elegance, got huge popularity.
”Maajhi meri kismat ke ….” from ”Ham Hindustani – 1960” has got everything of her trademark delicacy but the song was a big miss amongst the listeners – may be a film factor played some role. This song has a marvellously crafted tune with magical rhythm & beat. Latabai’s magical aalap, well controlled & balanced delivery of the words with the beats & the tune plus the perfect blend of chorus and the flute in the end to wind up … all make this composition as one of the best 5 compositions of her in my view.
Retro … This song was written by her father – Manohar Lal Khanna who penned many songs in many hindi films under the jodi ”Javed-Anwar” where Javed was Manohar Khanna.

Corrections please, “Maajhi mere qismat ke” was written by RAJINDER KRISHAN,
not by Manohar lal Khanna/Manohar K

Please make necessary corrections
HFGK also mentions this and the vinyl record of the movie also mentions Rajinder Krishan`s name as lyricist of this song
