Movies with the name Zindagi have been made four (or maybe five) times. As per the recorded listings, the first instance of a film named Zindagi is in 1940. This is a New Theatre Productions from Calcutta, directed by PC Barua. The primary players in this film are KL Saigal, Jamuna, Pahari Sanyal, Ashalata, Sham Laha, Nemo, Manorama, Sitara, Dhruba Kumar, Bikram Kapoor, Rajnirani, and Ramkumari etc. The screenplay for this film is adapted from the novel ‘Priya Baandhabee’ by Prabodh Sanyal.

A social, almost romantic melodrama, the theme tackled by this movie is a bold and controversial one, considering the time period of its original release. It deals with a relationship between a man and a woman, who are not married to each other, and yet, for various compulsions and motivations, end up having a live in relationship.

Ratanlal (KL Saigal) is a vagrant, gambling bum. In reality, he is an MA degree holder, but has been unsuccessful in finding a job. Shrimati (Jamuna) is a beautiful but errant and rebellious wife of an abusive husband. They have a very coincidental late night introduction, as both are moving about trying to evade the keepers of the law.

The introduction leads into being a team of confidence tricksters, who start to raise money through fake charities. Working together also leads to living together. In time, there is information that Shrimati’s rich father has passed away, and has left a huge estate to her. Shrimati’s mind transitions to change for better, and she devotes herself to social work in earnest. The two characters drift apart. Shrimati adopts an orphan girl child and starts brining her up. As the opportunity comes to appoint a teacher for the child, Ratanlal appears once again, and is hired as a tutor for the child.

There are emotionally dramatic passages, as Ratanlal expresses his desires once again for Shrimati, and wants to start another shared life with her and the adopted child. Shrimati, ridden with the guilt of her past actions, rebuffs his advances. The story has a sad ending with Ratanlal and Shrimati moving apart once again, not to meet again.

The film is a serious essay on human affiliations. It examines the relationships at various levels – opportunisms vs. morality, the social stigma vs. the affairs of the heart, the emotional vagrancy vs. social compromises.

The lyrics for the movie are written by Kidar Sharma, and the music compositions are by Pankaj Mullick. There is a total of seven songs listed for this film. Of these, four are identified as sung by Saigal Saab. Three of these are already posted on this blog.

Here is the fourth solo song by Saigal Saab for this movie. It is a very sad and melancholic song. The words of the song indicate separation and yearning to meet again – a ‘parwaanaa’ pleading with the ‘shama’ to take notice of him. And as the melancholy deepens, it is Saigal Saab’s voice that can do justice to the emotion. Enjoy.

Lyrics

heyyy
deewaanaa hoon,
deewaanaa hoon
raahat se main begaanaa hoon
raahat se main begaanaa hoon
deewaanaa hoon,
deewaanaa hoon
raahat se main begaanaa hoon
raahat se main begaanaa hoon
dil ko kaise behlaa’un main
haan ye zakhm kise dikhlaa’un main
dil ko kaise behlaa’un main
ye zakhm kise dikhlaa’un main
aansoo sun sun kar hanste hain
kyaa dard bharaa afsaanaa hoon
kyaa dard bharaa afsaanaa hoon

aayee na bahaar khizaan hi sahee
aayee na bahaar khizaan hi sahee
ujde dil mein armaan hi sahee
ujde dil mein armaan hi sahee
hairaan hoon ki aakhir kyaa hoon main
hairaan hoon ki aakhir kyaa hoon main
aabaad hoon ya veeraanaa hoon
aabaad hoon ya veeraanaa hoon
ghaayal hoon tum se door hoon main
ghaayal hoon tum se door hoon main
par phoonk chukaa majboor hoon main
par phoonk chukaa majboor hoon main
ae shamaa balaayen le aa kar
ae shamaa balaayen le aa kar
aakhir main bhi parwaanaa hoon
aakhir main bhi parwaanaa hoon
aakhir main bhi parwaanaa hoon
